Nichols will accept the award on Oct. 29 by Taxicab, Limousine & Paratransit Association (TLPA) at the trade group’s 97th Annual Convention and Trade Show, held this year in Las Vegas. The annual event is the largest gathering of the for-hire transportation fleet industry in the world.
The nephew of a U.S. Congressman from Oklahoma, Nichols’ family moved to Arlington when he was a young boy. His father became involved in the ground transportation business at the new Washington National Airport and later became an owner of Arlington Yellow Cab, where Nichols began learning the business when he was still in high school. In 1964, Nichols started Red Top Cab Company from scratch, which he continues to run along with Yellow Cab of Fairfax and Yellow Cab of Falls Church. After his father’s death, Yellow Cab of Arlington was taken over by his father’s former partners. Nichols said one of his greatest satisfactions in life was purchasing Yellow Cab of Arlington back from his father’s partners when it went into bankruptcy. Nichols still operates that company to this day.
Arlington Thrive was founded in 1975 to help Arlington residents who experience a financial crisis, such as temporary unemployment, illness or death of a family member, making it difficult or even impossible to pay basic bills.

Arlington, Virginia, September 17, 2015– On Tuesday, October 6th the Arlington Community Foundation will host its 19th Annual Community Cup Golf Classic and the 3rd Annual Long & Foster Tennis Open at the Washington Golf and Country Club. Co-chaired by Bart McKenzie of BB&T and Joe McMahon, Jr. of Ventera Corporation, the golf tournament is hoping to break records with close to 90 players comprised of business, civic and community leaders joining forces to raise close to $75,000 to support the Foundation.
Not to be outdone, the tennis committee led by Peggy Richardson of Long & Foster is planning on raising over $20,000 to benefit the Arlington Community Foundation. This year’s goals will be made possible in large part thanks to a $10,000 matching gift from Mr. Boomer Foster of Long & Foster.
Arlington, VA (September 17, 2015) – Virginia Hospital Center is proud to announce that Arlington Pediatric Center (APC) has again received the National Committee on Quality Assurance’s (NCQA) Level III Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) recognition, its highest level of recognition.
“The NCQA Patient-Centered Medical Home recognition raises the bar in defining high-quality care by emphasizing access, health information technology and coordinated care focused on patients,” said NCQA President Margaret E. O’Kane. “This recognition demonstrates that Arlington Pediatric Center has the tools, systems and resources to provide its patients with the right care at the right time.” Since opening as a community benefit program of Virginia Hospital Center in 2001, APC has enrolled nearly 12,000 children and provided more than 161,000 clinical visits to Arlington children living in low-income families and uninsured Arlington children.
