The Arlington County Board has approved a $4 million land purchase to build a new Columbia Pike fire station.

Fire Station 7 is slated to be built on two parcels of land next to Serrano Apartments at 5519 Columbia Pike — near Bailey’s Crossroads and about two miles away from the former Fire Station 7 in Fairlington that shuttered in 2019.

A large fire department response responded to an underground utility fire in Crystal City this afternoon.

The fire, on the 2400 block of Crystal Drive amid office and apartment buildings, followed reports of an “explosion” heard and felt in the area shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday.

A gas leak prompted the complete closure of a section of Columbia Pike during Thursday’s evening rush hour.

Fire department units were dispatched to the scene around 4:45 p.m, leading to Pike being shut down between S. Courthouse Road and S. Scott Street.

Firefighters were dispatched to the Green Valley neighborhood around 9:30 p.m. Friday after several people called 911 to report a building on fire.

A large Arlington County police and fire department response was once again on scene of the Key Bridge Marriott this morning.

In connection to the response, the county said it would prove to the media “an update on the ongoing operation to secure the property located at 1401 Langston Blvd.” A press conference was scheduled for 10:30 a.m. in nearby Gateway Park.

For the second day in a row, there’s a fire in a large Rosslyn condominium building.

After a vehicle fire in the parking garage of the Atrium Condominium at 1530 Key Blvd on Monday morning, there’s now a reported electrical fire in the garage area. A second alarm has been called in to help extinguish the fire and ventilate smoke from the building.

Smoke was reported around 10 a.m. at the Atrium Condominium at 1530 Key Blvd. Initial reports suggest that some sort of fire in the parking garage spread smoke to parts of the building.

The Arlington County Fire Department is sounding the alarm on the hazards of carelessly disposing of rechargeable batteries.

A live demonstration highlighting the dangerous potential of punctured rechargeable batteries and overcharged e-bikes is scheduled to take place later today (Thursday) in Montgomery Village, Maryland. Arlington Chief Fire Marshal Matthew Cobb is joining officials from D.C. and Montgomery County in this vivid installment of a four-week education program led by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG).

A man has been hospitalized after crashing while riding a scooter this morning.

The crash happened around 10:30 a.m. on Washington Blvd at 19th Road N., near Westover. There was reportedly no vehicle involved — the man fell off the scooter while riding. It happened near an uneven section of road that is apparently being repaved.
