Heavy rains and severe storms may make for a challenging evening commute today (Monday).
The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch, warning of 1-2 inches of rain or more this evening. (See below.)

The rain may cause some minor flooding problems on the roadways and along streams, forecasters say.
“Rain will be locally heavy at times through this evening,” said the National Weather Service. “Localized flooding of small streams and creeks as well as urban areas is possible late this morning into this evening.”

Beer Store, TechShop Collaborate for New Kegerator — Crystal City Wine Shop (220 20th Street S.) has teamed up with nearby TechShop to create a new kegerator. The custom-modified refrigerator allows the store to offer varieties of craft beer that aren’t available in bottles or cans. Customers can take the beer home in fillable cans known as crowlers. (Updated at 1:10 p.m.) Arlington County and much of the D.C. area could see upwards of 3-6 inches of rain between Wednesday night and Friday morning.
The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for the area that’s now in effect from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 8 a.m. Friday, warning of the potential for streams and creeks to flood.

Update at 11:15 p.m. — Numerous tree branches and power lines were reported to be down around Arlington following the storm. Currently, 366 Dominion customers are without power in the county.
Update at 9:05 p.m. — A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for Arlington.

Update at 8:35 p.m. — The northbound GW Parkway is closed from Spout Run to the Beltway due to large potholes in the roadway. Drivers should expect heavy traffic on the Spout Run Parkway, and at Lee Highway at N. Kirkwood Street.
N/B parkway from Spout Run to 495 closed due to potholes. Crews onsite and working to repair.
Forecasters says a storm system that’s making its way north from Louisiana will dump 1-3 inches of rain and spawn some potentially strong thunderstorms (see Storm Prediction Center outlook, left).

APS announced the cancellation decision around 4:30 a.m, as most roads and sidewalks were still icy from freezing rain. Fairfax County Public Schools and many other local school systems made the same call, although D.C. Public Schools are only on a two hour delay.
