An Arlington man and his girlfriend were killed in a shooting in Loudoun County yesterday.

Diego Alexander Woollett, 22, was one of two people shot and killed in the area of Huntington Square in Sterling early Thursday morning, police said.

The Arlington County Board has announced plans to dismiss all current members of the Human Rights Commission.

Following months of mounting tension, the County Board plans to revise the commission’s charter and clarify members’ duties. A 50-year-old man is facing numerous charges after the wild incident, which started with a shoplifting at the Target store on N. Glebe Road.

Arlington County police are investigating an incident that resulted in a theft suspect discharging a round from the gun of a responding officer.

The incident happened just after 4:30 p.m. when a person began to load up a backpack with merchandise from the Target at 740 N. Glebe Road, according to scanner traffic.

An Arlington man likely caused the explosion that killed him and leveled his house during a standoff with police in December, authorities have concluded.

James Yoo, 56, appears to have poured gasoline throughout the basement where the blast — which engulfed the house in a fireball, hurled debris for three blocks and could be heard and felt for miles around — originated. Investigators concluded that Yoo himself likely sparked the blast by striking an ignition source such as a match, lighter, flare or gun.

A man was shot and critically injured in a hotel parking lot in Courthouse early Sunday morning.

The shooting happened just before 3 a.m. on the 1200 block of N. Courthouse Road, according to Arlington County police, and as of Sunday afternoon the victim remains in critical condition at a local hospital.

The Arlington County Board and the Human Rights Commission are at odds over whether commissioners had the right to request an investigation into possible human and civil rights violations at the county jail.

Earlier this month, the commission sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Justice, voicing concerns over reports that inmates at the jail lack adequate healthcare, a situation they argue could put them “at risk of death and severe harm.” This follows up on letters to the County Sheriff’s Office and the DOJ from the Arlington branch of the NAACP and its national organization, asking for an investigation after hearing from former and current inmates.

Arlington police have charged a former Washington-Liberty High School basketball coach with sexual offenses and are seeking possible additional victims.

George Porcha, 53, of Winterville, North Carolina, is charged with carnal knowledge of a minor and taking indecent liberties with children, per an Arlington County Police Department press release sent out this evening (Tuesday).
