Arlington’s long and proud history in high-school crew was embellished at this spring’s second weekend of the state-champion regatta.
That’s when two varsity eight girls and boys shells from Arlington schools finished first in the premier races at the Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association competition on the Occoquan Reservoir.
The Yorktown Patriots’ latest victory over the Washington-Liberty Generals in baseball action accomplished two things.
The 7-2 win extended Yorktown’s long winning streak over its Arlington rival to 16 games, starting with a victory during the 2017 high-school season.
A number of former standout softball players on high school teams from Arlington continue having success participating in the women’s college sport this spring.
Washington-Liberty High graduate Bridget Bartz batted .353, hit two home runs and had 18 RBI for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. The junior starting shortstop had 30 hits, including six doubles, and played in 32 games. Her two home runs came in the same contest.
How about the comeback of the Yorktown Patriots boys lacrosse team?
The squad battled back from a 1-6 start to the high-school season to even its record and earn the second seed in the Liberty District tournament.
An up-and-down regular season ended on a high note with three straight victories during a key stretch for the Yorktown Patriots in softball.
In addition, the girls high-school team (10-10) finished 4-0 against Arlington rivals, defeating the Wakefield Warriors and Washington-Liberty Generals twice each. That also was the case last spring.
Nearly 40 players from Arlington high schools were chosen to the various girls and boys all-Liberty District lacrosse teams for their performances during the spring season.
On the girls side, multiple players from the undefeated and defending Class 6 state-champion Yorktown Patriots were selected to first and second teams and honorable mention.
The high-school regular-season sports schedules for Arlington’s teams are concluded, and now it’s on to the postseason for public-school teams.
The playoffs are underway with district-tournament competitions.
The girls softball program at Yorktown High School turned 50 years old this spring, and there was a pregame event May 2 to celebrate the anniversary.
Some 30 alumni from past teams were on the field introduced prior to Yorktown’s Liberty District home game against the Marshall Statesmen.
The website Novahoops.com recently named a number of high-school basketball players from Arlington to its girls and boys all-Northern Virginia freshman and sophomore teams for the 2024-25 season.
On the girls sophomore team was Arlington’s Sabrina Anderson, a guard for the Potomac School private squad, who already has scored 1,000 career points. Bishop O’Connell’s Mia Morrill was chosen a reserve on the sophomore team.
In extra-inning road games played the same night, the Washington-Liberty Generals and Yorktown Patriots continued their winning ways in high-school baseball action.
In 10 frames, W-L (13-7, 7-4) nipped the Langley Saxons, 6-5, in a Liberty District contest. Yorktown (12-7, 6-4) rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the final two innings to top the South Lakes Seahawks in non-league action.
On the first of two weekends of Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association competition, the Wakefield Warriors had a champion in what is known as the novice states regatta.
The Wakefield girls novice 4 finished first in 6:29.1, coming in ahead of five other shells in the race on the Occoquan Reservoir. In the finals, Battlefield finished second in 6:35.7.

For the private-school Bishop O’Connell Knights, postseason action already is underway with conference and district action.
