Close baseball games? It’s been the norm for the Washington-Liberty Generals high-school team over the past two seasons.
And in recent action, the trend has continued.
Yorktown High School
Two seniors for the Washington-Liberty Generals won boys races and a freshman for the Yorktown Patriots was first in a girls event at the Cassel’s XBC Track Experience meet at Chantilly High School.
For W-L, Carson Owens sprinted to victory in 10.78 seconds in the 100-meter dash and Emmett Engelhardt won the 1,600 in a speedy 4:13.47.

The lacrosse playoffs haven’t begun, but the Yorktown Patriots were in postseason form with a couple of recent big victories over a four-day span against two perennial powers and former girls state champions.
The first win was a 16-15 overtime triumph over the visiting Western Albemarle Warriors of Crozet. The Warriors won the past two Virginia High School League Class 4 state championships and had a three-season 43-match winning streak snapped with the loss.
The high-school sports schedule for Arlington’s three public high schools continues in full swing, with a full slate of competition in the many spring sports.
The regular seasons last only another week or so, followed by the start of postseason action.
The Yorktown Patriots (8-6) split two games with their Arlington public-school neighborhood baseball rivals in recent days, defeating the Washington-Liberty Generals, 4-2, then losing to the Wakefield Warriors, 8-4.
The win over W-L was the Patriots’ 15 straight against the Generals (10-6).
In a seesaw girls softball game, the Yorktown Patriots eventually pulled away and defeated the host Washington-Liberty Generals in an all-Arlington neighborhood high-school clash.
Yorktown won the Liberty District contest, 20-9, after trailing by scores of 3-0, 5-2 and 9-6.

Despite their 3-6 record, don’t count out the Yorktown Patriots in boys lacrosse just yet this season.
Their record is below .500, but the schedule for the young Patriots has been brutal, one of the toughest in the state, so far during the spring high-school campaign.
A number of former baseball players from Yorktown and Bishop O’Connell high schools had seen significant action for Division I and III college teams this spring through April 21 games.
The list from Yorktown includes James Tallon (junior pitcher, Duke University), Kyle Langley (sophomore outfielder, James Madison University), Jack Rucker (freshman pitcher, Richard Bland College), Chase Rubin (junior pitcher, Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and Ketz Murray (sophomore pitcher, Marymount University).
With seven NFL seasons now complete, M.J. Stewart is busy preparing for his next pro campaign with the Houston Texans this coming fall.
This will be the fourth football season with Houston for the 5-foot-11-inch, 205-pound safety, a 2014 graduate of Yorktown High School where Stewart was a standout runningback, defensive back and kick returner.

The renowned D.C. Touchdown Club recently recognized former longtime Yorktown High School head football coach Bruce Hanson for his highly successful career and amassing 302 career victories over more than 40 years in the game.
Hanson was honored at the club’s annual awards dinner on April 10 at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, receiving the Circle of Legends award.
With varying degrees of success, the Wakefield Warriors, Washington-Liberty Generals and Yorktown Patriots participated in different spring-break baseball tournaments in recent days.
Yorktown (7-5) had the best record of the three high-school teams, finishing 3-2 in the competition at Patriot Park in Fairfax.
