A revised business plan, which will be presented to the County Board this afternoon, will suggest slashing Artisphere’s hours, shuttering its restaurant and retail store, and generating more revenue via corporate event rentals.
Even if the plan is implemented, however, the task force expects Artisphere to burn through more than $2.3 million in taxpayer funds in financial year 2012 and another $1.6 million in financial year 2013. If the new plan is shelved, Artisphere will require nearly $2.7 million in taxpayer support in FY 2012, the task force said. The one-year-old venue’s original business plan projected only $739,975 in county taxpayer support in FY 2012.

The “Crystal City Wine Shop” — as the store is called in the application — will be located on the ground floor of the Lenox Club apartment building at 401 S. 12th Street.
A phone number listed for the Crystal City Wine Shop on Facebook is the same as that of the Washington Wine Academy, which operates a wine and beer education center at 1201 S. Eads Street, across the street from the future wine store.
The new restaurant is expected to open on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012. It will be the Chicago-based chain’s first Virginia location, although it currently has half a dozen locations open in the District of Columbia.
“Rosslyn is the perfect location for the Mediterranean-inspired, fast, casual, tasty and healthy food because of the amazing community filled with hip, active and health conscious professionals,” the company’s PR rep said in an email. “By serving ‘food that loves you back,’ Roti is the perfect meal option for the residents and businesses in the area.”
The 56-year-old employee, whose identity has not yet been publicly released, was attempting to move some cars around a service area using a stackable lift when the accident happened.
“It appears the lift came down on him,” said Arlington County Police Department spokesman Lt. Joe Kantor. “We still don’t know how it happened yet, that’s part of the investigation. It’s being classified as an industrial accident at this time.”
During the past year, and particularly the past two months, local credit unions have experienced rapid growth. Navy Federal has experienced a 23 percent increase in new customers in 2011, compared to its typical annual growth of 7 percent.
The 17,000 member Arlington Community Federal Credit Union, meanwhile, saw a 34 percent increase in new customers from September to October, in addition to a 100 percent increase in new online checking accounts during the same period.
Despite the fact that 29 percent of Americans say they’re seriously trying to lose weight, there are few signs that people are actually cutting back on their annual Thanksgiving feasts.
This year, the National Turkey Federation estimated that 46 million turkeys would be consumed on Thanksgiving — that’s almost 3 pounds of turkey per person, given the average weight of 16 pounds per bird.

The Patriots finished the regular season undefeated (10-0) for the first time and reached the championship thanks to a pair of dominating playoff wins over McLean (20-16) and Lee (50-15), but they had no answer for the physical Stallion defense, led by Virginia Tech recruit Devin Vandyke, who had three sacks and a fumble recovery.
Vandyke and Oren Burks collapsed the pocket on what seemed like every play, coming hard up the middle and off the edge, and South County’s defense pressured Yorktown quarterback Smith into two interceptions and a fumble.
