New Commercial Tenant for Bromptons at Cherrydale

A commercial tenant will soon move into a building that’s been the center of a years-long controversy in the Cherrydale neighborhood. A Subway restaurant is coming to the Bromptons at Cherrydale building (3800 Lee Hwy), now known as 3800 Lofts.

The residential space above the restaurant was supposed to be sold as condos, but multiple issues prompted the developer to convert the units to rentals over the summer.

Subway will be the first retail tenant in the building. The space, including the residential portion, sat empty for years due to problems with the building’s structural soundness, multiple lawsuits and a faltering economy.

Work has already begun on the restaurant, but there’s no word yet on an opening date.

    So disappointing.

  • Burger

Wow! I can feel the excitement….where is the sarcasm button.

    • Southeast Jerome

      I’m feeling subwayyyyyyyyyyyyyy

  • arglebargle

Is there any parking at all there for customers?

    • racster

That’s the big problem with the building and the one down the street (where the Dunkin Donuts is). There is no parking. And it’s not exactly like there’s tons of foot traffic there.

      • Smartypants

        Park at the Safeway.

  • blah

  • Abe Froman

Wow, the stench of their baked bread will certainly drive off anyone willing to over pay for a condo overlooking a busy secondary road.

    • LP

As mentioned in the article, they are no longer condos.

      • Josh S

Not to mention – has this guy ever heard of Manhattan? People pay big big big bucks to be located on roads even busier than Lee Highway.

        Comment makes no sense….

        • Sam

Except that Cherrydale is hardly Manhattan.

    • novasteve

      It’s actually cardboard, not bread.

      • Southeast Jerome

Tough choice b/t subway and italian store for a sub….

        • Bluemontsince1961

Italian Store hands down for me! They are great!

          • b-crip

            sarcasm dude. come on now.

  • NoVapologist

A notice on the entrance to the building said to expect 6-8 weeks for construction.

The answer is “no” on the parking, unless they give Subway some of the spaces behind the building or convert the grassy stretch in front of the building into parking.

    • flattened

they can offer paninis that are made when the building collapses on the sandwiches

      • Josh S

Yeah, I just don’t understand this. The county declares the building uninhabitable and then through various legal meanderings, it is now declared habitable?
        What changed in the meantime?
I would never consider living there.

(THen again, I guess it did survive the earthquake…..)

        • LP

They made significant structural changes to the building for it to be deemed safe.

With that being said, I still wouldn’t live there.

        • Southeast Jerome

FWIW, the places look super sweet. They are pricey, but they’re huge for 2bedroom apts. I think once this area develops over the next 10years, these will be nice places to live in.

          • jan

only if they build a trolley along Lee Highway

          • SoMuchForSubtlety

They are planning a streetcar along Lee HWY.

          • Southeast Jerome

          • SoMuchForIgnorance

Where did you hear that? Oh right, you just made it up.

  • Southeast Jerome

What Cherrydale really needs is a ________________?

    • Lou

      Subway (stop)

    • Richard Cranium

A Wegmans! Yeah, that’s it – Wegmans! The panacea to everything!

    • Spiteful

      Dr. Dremo’s

    • Metro Stop

      There, I said it.

    • Hoagie Lover

      • Extra Sweets

Dear “Hoagie Lover” – Wawa and hoagie lover should never be used in the same sentence. Now if you had said Sarcone’s or Paesano’s we’d be onto something good.

Though I will readily admit a WaWa hoagie surely beats a Subway sandwich and it’d be nice to have a WaWa nearby.

        • Yep Uhuh

Talk about damned with faint praise….

a poke in the eye with a sharp stick beats a Subway sandwich

    • Mayday Malone

      Ray’s the….anything.

  • dk

  • John

Finally! Subway is back in Cherrydale after a 15 year absence. And it’s right across the street from the old location.

    • Mayday Malone

That’s right – I’m predicting the grand opening of Supee’s Kitchen Too in that spot in 5 years.

  • charlie

cherrydale gets Subway and Columbia Pike gets an Audi dealer. what great additions to our urban fabric.

    • Southeast Jerome

I’d rather the Audi Dealer than Subway.

  • Homeowner

Darn, I was hoping for a Starbucks or a 7-11.

    • Dia

No parking. Starbucks and 7-11 know the only way to make the big bucks is to have parking!

  • Ho hum

100,000 comments sounds impressive, until you realize 39 of them are chat room crap about a sandwich shop.
