A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for Arlington and the surrounding region through 9:00 tonight.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service say scattered thunderstorms this afternoon and evening may produce damaging wind gusts, large hail, and heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding.

The area is also under a heat advisory. From NWS:

…HEAT ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 PM EDT THIS EVENING…

* HEAT INDEX VALUES…AROUND 105 DEGREES.

* MAXIMUM TEMPERATURES…AROUND 100 IN THE CITIES…UPPER 90S ELSEWHERE EAST OF THE MOUNTAINS.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A HEAT ADVISORY MEANS THAT A PERIOD OF HOT TEMPERATURES IS EXPECTED. THE COMBINATION OF HOT TEMPERATURES AND HIGH HUMIDITY WILL COMBINE TO CREATE A SITUATION IN WHICH HEAT ILLNESSES ARE POSSIBLE. DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS…STAY IN AN AIR-CONDITIONED ROOM…STAY OUT OF THE SUN…AND CHECK ON ELDERLY RELATIVES AND NEIGHBORS. WEAR LIGHT WEIGHT AND LOOSE FITTING CLOTHING WHEN POSSIBLE.

NEVER LEAVE SMALL CHILDREN OR PETS UNATTENDED IN VEHICLES. TEMPERATURES INSIDE THE VEHICLE CAN RAPIDLY CLIMB TO 130 DEGREES.

TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS IF YOU WORK OR SPEND TIME OUTSIDE. WHEN POSSIBLE…RESCHEDULE STRENUOUS ACTIVITIES TO EARLY MORNING OR EVENING. KNOW THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION AND HEAT STROKE.

TO REDUCE RISK DURING OUTDOOR WORK…THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDS SCHEDULING FREQUENT REST BREAKS. ANYONE OVERCOME BY HEAT SHOULD BE MOVED TO A COOL AND SHADED LOCATION. HEAT STROKE IS AN EMERGENCY – CALL 9 1 1.

Please don’t let Westover lose the power for another 6 days.

    • CO2IsYourFriend

      why not?

    • Edison

Westover Leftover, as another Arlington resident (Claremont) who endured six days and six nights without power after the storm, I am curious as to how many of you there were affected. About one hundred contiguous homes and hundreds of people in the affected portion of Claremont.

Do you know anyone who actually received no power until after Thursday, July 5? I have been asking people whom I encounter (outside my area of Claremont) how they did in the storm. No one has said that they had to wait past Tuesday, July 2.

      • Edison

I mean past Tuesday, July 3.

        • Observer

Thursday around 3:00pm for me. I am also in the Westover neighborhood.

          • Edison

In Claremont power came back on at 6:55 PM.

          • Observer

I don’t put any specific fault on Dominion. They were actually fairly accurate in their estimates. I don’t know of any people who had to wait longer than Dominion’s worst case scenario in their updates.

          • Edison

For future events of this nature, Dominion’s projected timeline of seven days for a worst case scenario would be a rather low bar for responsiveness acceptability, given the severity of the weather and the enormous and dangerous strain it was inflicting on the population.

True, who had heard of a derecho, or experienced one around here? But now that there is a precedent, we have been warned, and the utilities and the local governments had better be much better resourced and prepared if they wish to avoid an angry public backlash in the future.

Five, six, seven days just doesn’t cut it. Not even close.

  • Really wanting to get a backup generator …

Well, we’re ready to lose power again. We’ve restocked the freezer and the refrigerator. The ice machine has (finally) filled up the ice bin. We’re as ready as we’re gunna be…
