Harris Teeter marks Ballston grand opening with free sampling event as old location closes

When one Harris Teeter shuts its doors, another one springs up.

At least that’s the case today (Tuesday), as the new Harris Teeter in Ballston is set to open its doors at 3 p.m. The store holding a “Taste of Teeter” sampling event until 7 p.m. to mark the grand opening.

At the same time, the neighboring location at 600 N. Glebe Road will shutter permanently once the ribbon is cut for the new store.

The event is open to everyone, offering complimentary food samples and live music, according to a press release. Customers can attend other tasting events throughout the week, earn double fuel points and more, as part of the opening, per the release.

The grocery chain announced the opening of the new store at 624 N. Glebe Road, nestled beneath 310 newly built apartment units, following its application for an occupancy permit last month.

With the new store opening, substantial discounts will be offered on items at the older location, and any unsold stock will be redistributed to nearby stores, according to a spokesperson for Harris Teeter.

The old store is set to be demolished, paving the way for the construction of several hundred apartments and tens of thousands of square feet of retail space. An exact demolition and construction timeline has yet to be set.

The spokesperson highlighted that the new Harris Teeter store boasts nearly 20,000 square feet more space than its former location and includes several new and updated amenities, including the following.

  • Expanded floral selection
  • Expanded meat and seafood selection
  • Two hot bars with rotating menus
  • Special event station with rotating menu
  • In-store hand-rolled sushi
  • In-store sandwiches
  • Pizza bar
  • Murray’s Cheese Shop
  • Expanded pharmacy
  • Walk-in beer fridge
  • Upstairs bar with craft beer on tap, plus wine and other selections
