UPDATE: Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued for Arlington and D.C.

Update at 5:35 p.m. — A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for Arlington and D.C. ahead of a line of storms approaching from the west.

The National Weather Service in Sterling Virginia has issued a

* Severe Thunderstorm Warning […]

* Until 600 PM EDT.

* At 530 PM EDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from near Lowes Island to 6 miles northwest of Dale City, moving east at 30 mph.

HAZARD…60 mph wind gusts.

SOURCE…Radar indicated.

IMPACT…Damaging winds will cause some trees and large branches to fall. This could injure those outdoors, as well as damage homes and vehicles. Roadways may become blocked by downed trees. Localized power outages are possible. Unsecured light objects may become projectiles.

* Locations impacted include…
Arlington, Alexandria, Centreville, Rockville, Bethesda, Reston, Annandale, Clinton, Springfield, College Park, Fort Washington, Herndon, Fairfax, Langley Park, Beltsville, Fort Hunt, Vienna, Groveton, Falls Church, and Huntington.

Earlier: After striking out over the past couple of weeks like batters facing Paul Skenes, Arlington might finally get a proper storm tonight.

The National Weather Service has issued another Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Arlington and the D.C. region, which is in effect until 10 p.m. Storms packing lightning and severe-level wind gusts are possible later today, fueled by an approaching cold front which should drop daily highs from the 90s and 100s to the 80s for the first time in awhile.

A Flood Watch is also now in effect for the area, on account of the potential for training storms dropping torrential rainfall.

* WHAT…Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible.

* WHERE…Portions of DC, including the following , District of Columbia, Maryland, including the following areas, Anne Arundel, Central and Southeast Howard, Central and Southeast Montgomery, Prince Georges and Southern Baltimore, and northern Virginia, including the following areas, Arlington/Falls Church/Alexandria, Central and Southeast Prince William/Manassas/Manassas Park and Fairfax.

* WHEN…From 2 PM EDT this afternoon through this evening.

* IMPACTS…Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS…
– Thunderstorms this afternoon and evening could have intense rain rates exceeding 2 inches per hour. If locally repetitive or prolonged thunderstorms develop, flash flooding could occur in flood prone urban and suburban areas.
