Preparations are underway for a wintry weekend in Arlington, with at least 1-3 inches of snow looking likely Saturday night into Sunday.
While some snow flurries are possible today (Friday), the accumulating snow in the forecast for later this weekend has brine trucks out on the roads in Arlington.
“Water, Sewer, Streets deployed a small number of salt trucks [Thursday] to start pre-treating primary roads and other priority areas in the County (hills, bridges and trouble spots),” Kiara Candelaria Nieves, a spokesperson for Arlington’s Department of Environmental Services, told ARLnow. “They plan to have more crews out [Friday] to treat roadways and are monitoring what the latest models are forecasting for the weekend.”
Main County roads and priority areas have started receiving pre-treatment today ahead of potential snow over the weekend. Preparations will continue as the forecast becomes clearer. In the meantime, read up on our winter storm response phases: https://t.co/4wMpLIjBHT pic.twitter.com/GXXW65uQZL

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) also has trucks out throughout Northern Virginia in preparation for tomorrow night.
“We have some residual salt in some areas from previous treatments, so our crews will be spot brining across the district,” VDOT spokesperson Ellen Kamilakis told ARLnow. “With below freezing temps in the forecast, we want to make sure our bridges, ramps, and overpasses are pretreated. With any storm, the forecast can change, so we continue to have touchpoints and can modify our mobilization plan as needed.”
Arlington County won’t deploy plows unless there’s at least 2-4 inches of accumulation. Last week’s snowfall brought about an inch and a half of snow to Arlington. The last sled-worthy snowfall in Arlington was in February 2025, when about half a foot fell.
