A fire in a small apartment building near Columbia Pike might have been intentionally set.
The fire broke out around 5 a.m. on Thursday, May 15. Firefighters rescued several people using ladders as the fire burned in a stairwell of the garden apartment building.

Inner Ear Tribute — “During a visit on Tuesday, what used to be Inner Ear Studios and another building, with a street address of 2700 S. Nelson Street, all that remains is a few dozen white cinder blocks. “That’s the wall, where the drum riser was, to mark as a memorial Inner Ear, and how important this was in our community,” said Connolly. F.C. Ditching Brick — “Staff is updating the sidewalk and crosswalk design standards in the City Streetscape Design Standards for commercial streets. The current all-brick standards was found to be costly to maintain and tripping hazards over time. The new sidewalk standards will be concrete with brick bands. The new crosswalk standards will be high-visibility continental crosswalks (zebra crossing) and red stamped asphalt on less busy streets.” [Falls Church Pulse]
Pride in the Pool — Numerous LGBTQ+ swimming competitions will be coming to Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center starting this week. As part of WorldPride celebrations, a large portion of the 2025 World LGBTQIA+ Aquatics Championship will take place at the facility between this Saturday and Thursday, June 5. A recent infrastructure issue at the aquatics center’s competition pool will not affect the schedule, a county spokesperson told ARLnow. –Dan Egitto
New Eatery Near Potomac Yard — “The owner of a popular local home improvement business is getting into the restaurant game. Michael & Son owner Basim Mansour is asking the city for approval to replace a 1940s-era convenience store with a 1,700-square-foot “fast casual restaurant with Asian foods with a Spanish and American influence.” That’s according to Mansour’s development special use permit request for the 6,600-square-foot property at 3314 Richmond Highway — across the street from Potomac Yard.” [ALXnow]

A 23-year-old D.C. woman is facing several charges after an incident that prompted a sizable police response at the Pentagon City mall.
It happened Tuesday morning when an officer confronted a shoplifting suspect, who then allegedly tried to flee, leading to a foot pursuit and a struggle.

Monday Afternoon Car Chase — “@PFPAOfficial & @ArlingtonVaPD had a report of someone breaking into cars in the lot across from Target around p.m. Officers converged on the lot looking for the person, but he had already gotten into a blue Hyundai. Police chased it east on Army Navy Drive. The Hyundai almost collided with a car at S. Hayes. It appears both PFPA & ACPD cut the chase near S. 12th and Army Navy.” [Dave Statter/X]
Fall of Saigon Remembered — “One of those local businessmen Vinh Nguyen, told his own harrowing story of his family’s flight from Vietnam in April 1974 when he was just 15 years old and the long circuitous path that led to their migration to one of four U.S. refugee camps in the U.S. and eventually to the D.C. area where they opened a small grocery business in what was known at the time in Arlington as a Little Saigon neighborhood of near present day Clarendon but soon migrated, with his family’s being one of the first, to the present day Eden Center.” [FCNP]
End of Line for D.C. Streetcar — “After less than a decade of operation, the D.C. Streetcar is set to be phased out and replaced by an electric bus that Mayor Muriel E. Tom Beers of Arlington, Va., died on May 20 after succumbing to complications related to metastatic kidney cancer. He was 74.
Tom will be remembered by many, but especially his life partner of 33 years, The Honorable Todd M. Harper, and his sister, Mary Anne Beers of Andover, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A 27-year-old Arlington man has been accused of assaulting a kid, threatening him and two other kids with a gun, and then trying to disarm an officer while getting arrested.
The alleged drunken incident happened Saturday afternoon near the Barcroft Apartments along Columbia Pike.

Robbery Near Columbia Pike — “The male victim was outside in the 900 block of S. Dinwiddie Street when 4-5 male suspects approached him, physically assaulted him and stole and undisclosed amount of cash. One of the suspects struck the victim with a bottle, causing a laceration. The victim ran from the scene and police were notified. The victim sustained minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.” [ACPD]

Alexandria Bans Gas Blowers — “Alexandria City Council unanimously approved an ordinance Saturday (May 17) banning gas-powered leaf blowers, making Alexandria the first jurisdiction in Virginia to enact such a prohibition. The ban follows years of community advocacy and comes after an August 2024 opinion from Virginia’s Attorney General confirming the city’s authority to regulate these devices through its noise ordinance.” [ALXnow]
