New cupcake and ice cream shop opening soon in Falls Church

A new spot for cupcakes, ice cream and other sweet treats is preparing to open in Falls Church.

Lil’ Cakes & Creamery, a local chain, is hoping to open at 120 Founders Avenue by the end of August, a spokesperson told ARLnow. The shop specializes in gourmet cupcakes with flavors such as key lime pie and caramel macchiato, plus treats like milkshakes and cookie ice cream sandwiches.

Environmental advocates recruit new ‘EcoAmbassadors’ to serve Arlington

An Arlington environmental organization is recruiting a new class of “EcoAmbassadors” to lead grassroots efforts and build community coalitions.

The initiative is a joint effort of EcoAction Arlington and Virginia Cooperative Extension. The five-week training program begins in September for volunteers ages 16 and older.

New Afghan restaurant brings kabobs and homemade baked goods to Langston Blvd

A new Afghan restaurant serving family recipes for kabobs, flavorful meat and baked goods opened on Langston Blvd earlier this year.

Amu Kitchen offers western Afghan cuisine with Mediterranean influences at 4775 Langston Blvd, with kabobs including char-grilled lamb, flame-grilled chicken, smoky ground beef and vegetable options. A specialty is the qabuli palau, a large piece of lamb cooked in rice to infuse it with juices and flavor.

Kids to learn business skills running their own booths at Arlington County Fair

Booths run by some of Arlington’s youngest entrepreneurs will be setting up at the Arlington County Fair this weekend, selling crafts, food and more.

Kids Markets will be hosting two kid-run markets on Saturday and Sunday at the fair, setting up booths in the upper field with goods such as jewelry, arts and crafts, crocheted items and fidget toys. Vendors aged 5-17 will be setting prices, handling transactions and pocketing their profits.

Seki Sushi opens in Crystal City with extensive sushi roll menu

A new sushi restaurant has opened in Crystal City, offering a wide menu of sushi rolls and other Japanese dishes.

Seki Sushi serves nigiri, sashimi and sushi rolls such as The Pentagon Roll, with snow crab, avocado, cucumber, scallops, jalapenos and a poke sauce. It opened at 480 11th Street S. in late June and offers a dinner experience where patrons can sit at the bar and watch sushi chefs at work.

Lost Dog Cafe’s rescue foundation celebrates 25 years of helping homeless pets

A mainstay Arlington restaurant is celebrating 25 years operating its dog and cat rescue shelter.

Lost Dog Cafe, the Westover-based pizza and sandwich spot, has helped more than 50,000 dogs and cats find homes since it launched the Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation in August 2001, co-founder Pam McAlwee told ARLnow.
