Between the ages of 18 months and 2.5 years old, children experience enormous growth. During this stage of development, children learn how to communicate feelings, navigate transitions, develop critical thinking skills, and build friendships. More families are turning to Montessori education because it empowers children to become more independent, motivated, and capable through hands-on learning and thoughtfully prepared classroom environments.
At Children’s House Montessori School (CHMS) in Arlington and Alexandria, that development begins with classrooms intentionally designed for toddlers. Walk into a CHMS toddler classroom, and you will see children pushing in their chairs, preparing their own snack, cleaning up after themselves, watering plants, practicing language skills, and independently choosing lessons from child-sized shelves. Every material and lesson has a purpose: to help young children build coordination, concentration, and the foundation for academic and social success during one of the most important stages of development.
Throughout the school day at CHMS, toddlers naturally build meaningful friendships with one another, whether that means engaging in parallel play on the playground, working on a lesson beside a friend, or helping a classmate clean up spilled water. These small everyday moments help children develop empathy, social skills, and patience within the classroom community.
As children grow more comfortable expressing themselves, experienced and certified CHMS teachers gently guide them to learn how to communicate their needs and interact respectfully. It’s no secret that Arlington has had quite the 2019, and as 2020 gets underway, here’s some of what’s opened, what’s closed, and what’s to come in 2020. For those keeping score, Ballston appears to be the hot spot for new restaurants, in part thanks to the opening of the renovated Ballston Quarter mall.
Bill Would Allow Open Containers in More Places — “A bill introduced in the Virginia General Assembly would let more shopping center developments offer open-container access under the state’s liquor laws. Sen. Barbara Favola, D-Arlington, introduced the measure… The change could theoretically benefit at least a couple of developments in Favola’s backyard,” including the Village at Shirlington and Market Common Clarendon. County Board Organizational Meeting Tonight — “The Arlington County Board will elect its 2020 County Board chair and vice-chair at its Organizational Meeting on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2020, at 6 p.m. in the County Board Room, Room 307 in the Ellen M. Bozman Government Center. The Board also will adopt procedures for 2020 and name Board members to represent Arlington on regional bodies.” [Arlington County]

Citing the arrival of Amazon’s HQ2, the parent company of Sport&Health says it will be expanding and renovating its fitness club in Crystal City.
The expansion will add 8,000 square feet to the club at 2231 Crystal Drive, adding additional space for strength training and studios to a location that already includes a cycle studio and indoor salt water pool.
