Arlington Public Schools is kicking off the school year with a more nuanced approach to curtailing athletic activity for hot and humid weather.
School Board members have adopted a new policy designating the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) as the benchmark covering athletic contests and practices.

Federal Takeover of D.C. — “President Donald Trump will federalize D.C.’s police department and deploy National Guard troops, he announced Monday, in historic restrictions on local control over the District. “This is liberation day in D.C. and we’re going to take our capital back,” the president said at a White House news conference. A White House official told NBC News that National Guard troops are expected to be on the ground Tuesday morning.” [NBC 4]

Shirlington Circle Crash — “[Sunday] night around 10:30pm, Arlington & @AlexandriaVAFD units responded to a multi-vehicle crash at the Shirlington Circle exit. Firefighters Remove Handcuffs — “R109 assisted in the removal of handcuffs that a child had accidentally placed on themselves. Due to the keyhole being inaccessible, they were unable to unlock the cuffs using the key. As a result, personnel carefully cut the handcuffs off to safely free the child without injury.” [ACFD/X]

Record demand has left Arlington’s largest food pantry with an $891,000 hole in its budget this fiscal year — and it may only get worse.

Ten new food disposal bins have been installed around Arlington, further expanding composting options for people in apartments and condos.
The new bins were installed last week in Pentagon City and Colonial Village, on Columbia Pike and at the Court House and Clarendon Metro stations. They bring county’s total number of collection machines up to 24.

Falls Church is getting a new destination for cheese and charcuterie.
Contractors are currently building the storefront for The Cheese Cartel at 922 W. Broad Street, founder Alyssa Romashko told ARLnow. The new small business plans to carry a rotating selection of meats, cheeses, wines and bread.

Arlington Public Schools leaders are playing their cards close to their chests following the end of a federal investigation into the school system’s anti-discrimination policy.
In response to demands from the U.S. Department of Education, which targeted policies allowing transgender students to use facilities corresponding with their gender identities, Superintendent Francisco Durán said only that APS has received the findings and is formulating a response.
