Last week’s court decision to overturn Missing Middle zoning changes freezes progress on dozens of projects around Arlington, county staff confirmed.

Following the ruling in Arlington Circuit Court, “the County must void all [Expanded Housing Option] permits and halt all review processes related to EHO development,” county spokesperson Ryan Hudson told ARLnow.

The government likes to release unpopular items on Friday afternoons, and, when the government has something really unpopular to say, the Friday afternoon before a holiday weekend is considered ideal. Last Friday, before the Memorial Day weekend, USCIS published a truly incredible policy reversal – PM 602-0199 (the “May 21 Memo”), which purports to upend the ability of most foreigners to apply for green cards from within the United States. DHS and USCIS’s respective public messaging on the memorandum is clear but wrong. The memorandum was more nuanced, but still, in our view, deeply misleading. The purpose of this advertorial is to explain what happened, why it matters, and offer some predictions about how this unforced error is going to be resolved.

First, here’s what DHS and USCIS said about their own memo.

What do these press releases mean? They mean to highlight the following distinction: some people apply for a green card from inside the United States, at USCIS field offices; others apply for a green card from outside the United States, at U.S. Embassies and Consulates abroad. Per both press releases, nearly everyone who applies from inside the U.S. is ineligible to become a lawful permanent resident. Almost everyone who applies for a green card should do so via U.S. Embassies and consulates abroad.

That might seem reasonable, and, ex ante, it could be, if our laws and institutions were set up properly. There are, unfortunately, a few problems with this new policy position, both practical and legal. (more…)

Six months after it was first submitted, a request to bestow historic-district status on an Arlington parcel slated for a major redevelopment continues to await action.

The request, formally submitted in April, came from local residents upset with plans by property owner Melwood to redevelop a 1.96-acre parcel on 23rd Street S. in Aurora Highlands as a mixed-use property and, likely, demolish the former Nelly Custis Elementary School on the site.

Green Pig Bistro is expected to reopen soon after relocating a few blocks away from its original home.

The Clarendon restaurant of 12 years has completed the 0.2-mile move from 1025 N. Fillmore Street to the first floor of 2900 Wilson Blvd, PR rep Jill Collins told ARLnow.

Arlington County police are looking for a blue sports car involved in a shooting along Route 50 last night.

The incident happened around 8:20 p.m. Monday on Route 50 at N. George Mason Drive. Multiple 911 callers reported shots fired amid an apparent road rage dispute between two drivers, according to scanner traffic.

An Arlington man who shot and killed a man in a Buckingham apartment was sentenced to 33 years in state prison yesterday (Monday).

James Ray Williams, 42, received 30 years for the murder of Sean “Malik” Bowman in 2023. He also received a three-year sentence for the use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, in addition to another seven years because he was on probation when he committed these crimes.

Former President Jimmy Carter, who turns 100 today, compiled a 1-for-2 record with the Arlington electorate.

The former Georgia governor in his successful 1976 bid for the White House defeated Republican Gerald Ford in the county tally, 32,536 to 30,872, according to data from the county government’s elections office.
