Arlington fire personnel plunged into a high-stakes rescue mission on Friday as Hurricane Helene swept through parts of Southwest Virginia.
The Arlington County Fire Department’s water rescue team arrived in the town of Damascus, about two and a half hours from hard-hit Asheville, N.C., to find a person trapped inside their home and surrounded with “fast moving, debris laden water.”
Arlington is under a Flood Watch and Severe Thunderstorm Watch today, with storms in the forecast Sunday afternoon.
The watches — in effect until later tonight — also include D.C., Alexandria, Fairfax County, Falls Church and other nearby jurisdictions.
Update at 9:10 a.m. — The ground stop at National Airport is still in effect, according to the FAA website, which reports current departure delays of up to an hour. Meanwhile, the earlier Flash Flood Warning has been replaced by a new Flood Warning.

Arlington and most of the D.C. area is now under both a Tornado Watch and a Flood Watch.
The Tornado Watch is in effect until 2 p.m. Friday while the Flood Watch is in effect until 8 p.m. Both were issued Thursday evening while the former Gulf Coast hurricane now labeled as Tropical Depression Debby makes its way north into Virginia.
