A gas leak prompted the complete closure of a section of Columbia Pike during Thursday’s evening rush hour.

Fire department units were dispatched to the scene around 4:45 p.m, leading to Pike being shut down between S. Courthouse Road and S. Scott Street.

County offices, courts, community centers and all public library locations will all close Thursday for Independence Day.

Curbside collection of recycling, trash and organics will continue on regular hours, as will the special collection of brush, metal and e-waste. However, the Earth Products Yard and Household Hazardous Materials facility in Shirlington will close.

A busy road is closed, multiple schools have closed, and a boil water advisory is in effect after a large water main break.

The break happened in a 16-inch water main early Friday morning — before 6 a.m. — near the intersection of S. Walter Reed Drive and S. Randolph Street, sending a large amount of water down the hill to S. Four Mile Run Drive.

A big traffic pattern change is coming this weekend, as part of ongoing construction on the GW Parkway.

The northbound lanes of the Parkway will close between Route 123, just north of Arlington, and the Beltway. The closure will allow for work on the ramp from the Parkway to I-495.

The southbound lanes of N. Glebe Road were blocked at N. Woodstock Street due to a crash involving a school bus.

The crash happened around 4:15 p.m. Friday, near Glebe Elementary School, and involves the bus and a car. Two students were on board the bus but no injuries have been reported, according to initial reports.

The Arlington Festival of the Arts returns to Clarendon this weekend to celebrate a decade of art showcases, which will prompt road closures.

Held annually at the corner of N. Highland Street and Washington Blvd, the festival is set to take place this Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. More than 125 local, national, and international artists will converge at this free, two-day event to exhibit a variety of artworks, ranging from original paintings and custom jewelry to mixed media and life-sized sculptures.
