A hair salon in Williamsburg has relocated to Westover, and one of its stylists is trying to re-connect with old customers after the move.
Par Hair Design, formerly located in the Williamsburg Shopping Center near the intersection of Williamsburg Blvd and N. Sycamore Street, has set up shop at 5852 Washington Blvd instead.
According to a sign posted at its former location, it made the move in May, and is now located across the street from Westover Beer Garden.
However, a dueling sign posted at the shop notes that “Tram Hairstyles” didn’t make the move to the Westover location, instead heading to Queen King Salon in McLean. Tram wrote on the sign that she’s “really missing all customers” who she got to know at Par Hair Design, urging anyone missing her as well to call the new McLean salon.
As for the old space in the Williamsburg Shopping Center, the 1,018-square-foot location is currently listed for lease.
A national hair salon chain that specializes in blowouts is coming to Arlington County as part of a nationwide expansion, but its location has not yet been revealed.
Drybar announced January 1 on Facebook it is expanding into Arlington and 21 other cities, including nearby Alexandria as well as in the likes of Pennsylvania, Texas, New Jersey among others.
A Drybar spokeswoman did not provide any further information on the Arlington outpost as of the time of writing after repeated requests, including requests for specifics on its location and a possible opening date.
Drybar offers hair blowouts at more than 70 locations in the United States and Canada, and has products at department stores like Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s.
Currently, the closest Drybar to Arlington is in Tysons Corner.

A nail and beauty studio is set to move in to Clarendon.
According to building permits filed with the county, Salon Lofts will move into 3001 Washington Blvd, in the long-vacant first floor of an office building in the neighborhood.
On its website, Salon Lofts says it allows beauty professionals to be independent business owners. The company provides tools, technical support and education to those interested in owning a studio, known as a “loft” by the company.
Owners can then customize their lofts and offer various beauty services.
It will be the third Salon Lofts in the D.C. metro area. The company also has locations in Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, North Carolina and Ohio.
County Board Stalls on VRE Decision — The Arlington County Board, at a Tuesday meeting that stretched into early Wednesday morning, declined to endorse one of the options for a proposed new Virginia Railway Express station in Crystal City. VRE officials, county staff, the Arlington Chamber of Commerce and Arlington’s Transportation Commission backed Option 2, which places the station closer to the Crystal City Metro station and transit center. Clarendon is getting a new upscale spot for men to get their hair cut and their beards trimmed.
Hendricks Gentlemen’s Barbershop, which is billing itself as Clarendon’s only high-end barbershop, is planning to open in just over a week.
Hendricks is the creation of Melanie St. Clair and Lisa Dahl, owners of Smitten salon in nearby Lyon Park.
“At Smitten we have a large male clientele so we know a barbershop is something Clarendon needs,” St. Clair tells ARLnow.com. “Hendricks… will offer men’s haircuts, beard trims and hot [straight razor] shaves. The concept is a throwback to old school barbershops, in a comfortable upscale setting.”
“Hendricks boasts a wall projector screen with ESPN as well as an original 100 year old barbershop chair from my great great grandfather’s barbershop in Baltimore,” St. Clair added. “We have experienced barbers on staff and will be opening Wednesday, September 7. Once the website is live this week, clients will have the convenience of online booking.”
Hendricks is located at 3000 Washington Blvd, near the 7-Eleven store, in the former Primp by Smitten space. Primp has since relocated to the main Smitten salon on N. Pershing Drive.

Coatroom, a new nail and waxing salon in Ballston, says it expects to open this spring.
The salon is located at 850 N. Randolph Street, in the former FroZenYo space. It aims to make nail and waxing services an invigorating experience.
“Your beauty maintenance should be a highlight, not a chore,” says the business’ website. “We are creating an enjoyable escape from your daily grind. Our lively atmosphere and friendly team make you smile the second you walk through our doors and feel refreshed when you leave.”
Getting a hair cut or your nails done in one of the most expensive areas in the country doesn’t have to cost a fortune — Arlington cosmetology schools offer low-cost services under professional supervision.
High school students at Arlington Career Center provide spa services as they prepare to pass the state exam to become licensed beauticians.
“The students do the work and it’s overseen by two cosmetology teachers,” instructor Rosenia Peake said.
A blowout costs $15, a haircut costs $10 and senior citizens get a 10 percent discount. Appointments at 816 S. Walter Reed Dr. are scheduled for 8 a.m., 11:15 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. and can be made by calling (703) 228-5799.
Students aren’t giving manicures now but will be later this year, said Peake, who noted the Arlington Public Schools-run program gets teenagers job-ready.
“You’re a professional in the 11th grade, and you haven’t even graduated from high school,” she said. “This is a stepping stone to another life.”
ACC principal Margaret Chung said the program serves both locals and students.
“It’s an incredible opportunity for our students to be able to give back to the community,” she said. “Students get hands-on experience and learn to interact in a professional way.”
For a little more money, Graham Webb Academy offers more extensive salon services in Rosslyn. At 1621 N. Kent St., student stylists give haircuts ($19), blowouts ($14), full highlights ($57) and more, according to their website. A manicure there costs $12, and a Brazilian Blowout runs $175.

In Virginia Square, Kenny’s Beauty Academy advertises women’s haircuts for $15, men’s haircuts for $10 and manicures for $10. A Brazilian keratin treatment there costs $100, the school’s website says. The 3461 Washington Blvd. school can be reached at (571) 522-4566.

Cherry Blow Dry Bar, a specialized hair salon, will be opening at 1041 N. Highland Street in Clarendon.
This won’t be a full-service salon offering haircuts and coloring. In fact, the website explains, “We do two things… and we do them extremely well.” Those two things are hair blow outs and extensions.
Cherry Blow Dry Bar offers $35 blow outs every day, regardless of hair length. Extensions are described as “premium, long-lasting, and beautifully blended tape extensions that won’t damage your hair.”
The goal, according to the website, is to transport customers to a world of celebrity-level luxury. Some of that luxury includes the ability to enjoy a complimentary glass of champagne or cocktail, in addition to soft chairs in a modern and relaxing environment.
Blow Dry Bar was founded in Sydney, Australia, in 2008 and now has 23 locations there. The owner began franchising in the U.S. last year under the name Cherry Blow Dry Bar. Currently there are two locations in Florida and one in Tennessee. Four others, including the Arlington location, are expected to open soon. No word yet on an exact date for the Clarendon opening.

Update at 10/4/12 — Phantacee Salon and Spa did not permanently close. It relocated to 2814 Washington Blvd in Lyon Park.
There has been some turnover among spas and salons in Clarendon.
The Phantacee Hair Salon and Spa at 3033 Wilson Boulevard recently closed up shop. Signs in the window indicate that a Casal’s dé Spa and Salon location will be opening in its stead.
Casal’s, which currently has two locations in northeastern Ohio, describes itself as a full-service, non-tipping salon.
“We operate with a team of hair, color, nail, massage therapy and esthetic experts committed to the health and beauty of our clients,” the Casal’s website says. “From day one, Casal’s has been a departmentalized salon and spa, staffed with the best professionals in their fields.”
Meanwhile, the Hollywood Tans location at 3000 N. Washington Boulevard has also closed. Customer accounts were moved over to the newer Palm Beach Tan location at 2900 Wilson Boulevard. Hollywood Tans customers were notified of the change via email last Friday.
