Arlington’s police union is calling for better pay following increases in some violent crimes and two incidents where suspects allegedly fought police.

As of last week, the Arlington County Police Department has 61 vacancies or a 16.2% vacancy rate, Randall Mason, president of the Arlington Coalition of Police, told ARLnow.

Arlington County police have released more information about a theft and shot fired incident in the Ballston area Wednesday evening.

A 50-year-old man is facing numerous charges after the wild incident, which started with a shoplifting at the Target store on N. Glebe Road.

Arlington County police are investigating an incident that resulted in a theft suspect discharging a round from the gun of a responding officer.

The incident happened just after 4:30 p.m. when a person began to load up a backpack with merchandise from the Target at 740 N. Glebe Road, according to scanner traffic.

Thieves have been increasingly targeting the Ballston area Target store, making it a frequent destination for police dispatches lately.

Arlington crime reports for July so far contain some 20 theft offenses for the 700 block of N. Glebe Road, where the store is located. The police department identifies crimes by block number and generally does not identify which specific businesses were the victim of crimes.

Five juvenile suspects were detained by police Wednesday evening, potentially in connection to the series of thefts from the Clarendon Lululemon store.

It started with officers observing a group of teens outside of the activewear store at 2847 Clarendon Blvd, which since mid-June has seen at least four thefts involving groups of young suspects grabbing armfuls of merchandise and fleeing.

Police are investigating another reported theft at Clarendon’s Lululemon store — at least the fourth since mid-June and the third in as many days.

Four male suspects reportedly entered the store, located at 2847 Clarendon Blvd, just after 4 p.m. on Wednesday and gathered merchandise before leaving the store without paying, an Arlington County police spokesperson said.

Arlington County police responded to the store at 2847 Clarendon Blvd just after 5 p.m. after two women in their teens or 20s had entered the store, gathered up merchandise, and left without paying, a police spokeswoman said.

A local high school student is hoping police can catch a man he says stole his bike in Pentagon City.

The alleged theft, on May 8 near Amazon’s HQ2, was caught on a surveillance camera and shared with ARLnow. The victim is a senior at Washington-Liberty High School.

Three suspects are facing multiple charges after a series of thefts led to a car chase on I-66.

The chase — involving a black BMW sport utility vehicle — happened during Thursday’s evening rush hour and ended in the eastbound lanes of I-66 near the exit to N. Ohio Street, in Arlington. It followed at least two separate thefts in Fairfax County, including at a Bath and Body Works store in Fair Oaks and a Kohl’s in Burke.
