With cooler weather in the forecast, and Thanksgiving just a few weeks away, the scene is set for the start of the Winter 2022 Arlies.
Voting starts next week with a new look and a return to voting once per season, but before we reveal the winter categories here’s a roundup of the Fall 2021 Arlies winners:
The board of the Arlington County Fair has its sights set on moving the annual event to Long Bridge Park.
But many residents who’ve weighed in say they’d rather see it stay at the Thomas Jefferson Community Center and grounds.

In the first gubernatorial race since Virginia implemented an array of voting reforms, one thing remains the same: early voter turnout in Arlington continues to surpass regional and state levels.
It’s a trend that Arlington’s general registrar and election director Gretchen Reinemeyer says she has seen since she started working with the county in 2008 as a seasonal employee with the Voting and Elections Office.

The Crossing Clarendon is buzzing with activity.
The mixed-use shopping and residential center formerly known as Market Common Clarendon is now home to tens of thousands of honeybees.
I have heard some variation on that sentence more times than I can count at public engagement sessions, County Board hearings and civic association meetings: “Cars just come speeding around that corner.” They shouldn’t be able to.
A street designed for pedestrian safety uses a solid, dependable and simple technique to force cars to slow down, the “corner radius.” Arlington is building streets using corner radii that are much larger than our policies say they should and they don’t seem to be taking into account a key concept: “effective” versus “actual” curb radii. The end result: drivers can whip around a corner at a high rate of speed making them much more likely to kill or severely injure a pedestrian in the crosswalk.
(Updated, 10/29/21, 10:10 a.m.) There will be free Lyft rides in Arlington and across the region this Halloween weekend.
The Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP) is again partnering with the rideshare company for the SoberRide program to provide free rides this upcoming Saturday (Oct. 30) night to prevent drunk and impaired driving.
In late 2019, Arlington’s rate of vacant office space was at a six-year low, 15.5%, and poised to continue dropping.
But the pandemic reversed that trend, and today, the vacancy rate hovers around 20%.
