Arlington County’s vacuum leaf collection has ended early.
The leaf season vacuum collection is complete. We are happy to report that the weather cooperated and other factors that allowed us to finish two days ahead of schedule. Thanks for everyone’s cooperation during this leaf season. Please note: the leaf bag collection will continue until January 14.
Leaf bag collection started on Nov. 1 and will run through Jan. 14. Leaf bags — which must be biodegradable, not plastic — are collected in neighborhoods one business day after garbage collection. Free leaf bags are available at a number of community centers around the county.
Arlington will begin its vacuum leaf collection service on Monday. There will be a second round of leaf vacuuming in December, ending on Dec. 24.
Held from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Crystal Drive, the market features about 20 local farmers and producers who bring together seasonal fruits and vegetables, farm-raised eggs, all-natural meats, cheeses, artisan soaps, and more.
Also at the market today: the Sweetflow Mobile frozen yogurt truck.
It’s Labor Day, the day when we traditionally mourn the end of summer (even though the official start of fall is more than two weeks away and at least two more 90+ degree days are predicted this week).

A woman fell several stories from the Ballston Public Parking Garage Thursday night, landing in front of a car that was about to exit the garage onto Glebe Road. The woman was alive when she was taken to the hospital but later succumbed to her injuries, police said.
The fall happened around 8:30 p.m. A police spokesperson was unaware of any witnesses other than the driver of the car.
The worker fell seven stories, through a glass atrium and into the hotel’s front lobby. No word yet on how the worker fell, but ironwork appears to have been underway on four balconies above the atrium.
A pickup truck from Newington, Va.-based Hallmark Iron Works was parked outside the hotel.
Police have identified the victim of a deadly fall in Courthouse yesterday as 29-year-old Arlington resident John Christopher Hamilton. Read the full police statement here.
A man was killed this afternoon when he fell nearly four stories off the ledge of an elevated apartment terrace onto a concrete driveway below. Police are still investigating the incident but preliminary reports suggest the fall was accidental, according to Arlington Police spokesperson Det. Crystal Nosal.
It happened just before 4:00 this afternoon at The Prime at Arlington Courthouse apartments (1415 North Taft Street). There were several witnesses who gave statements to police.
