While a major portion of GW Parkway construction work is wrapping up in Arlington, another is scheduled to get underway next year.

From Spout Run Parkway up to the Beltway in McLean, paving is done and mainline construction is on track to conclude by the end of the month as a major rehab project announced in 2021 draws toward a close.

New water fountains and refill stations are coming to the Mount Vernon Trail, the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial and other federally controlled parts of Arlington.

The National Park Service plans to install up to 14 new stations at “high-priority locations” in the vicinity of GW Parkway.

A woman was rescued Tuesday evening after driving into the Potomac River along the GW Parkway.

The incident happened shortly before 7 p.m. on the Parkway between the 14th Street Bridge and Memorial Bridge. A crowd gathered along the Mt. Vernon Trail as U.S. Park Police and good Samaritans helped to pull the driver to shore.

The suspect in a fatal New Year’s Day crash on GW Parkway was illegally behind the wheel of his pickup truck, authorities say.

Carlos Jose Hernandez Romero did not have a driver’s license when he fatally struck a woman in an SUV while apparently speeding and driving the wrong way on the Parkway, according to a sworn U.S. Park Police affidavit.


Weather

Arlington and the rest of the D.C. area are gearing up for significant snowfall.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning this afternoon, to take effect at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Some 4-8 inches of snow are expected to fall by the time the flakes taper off Wednesday morning.


Traffic

The GW Parkway is closing early Sunday morning due to expected snow.

The National Park Service announced Saturday night that the Parkway would close between Spout Run in Arlington and the Beltway, starting at 6 a.m. A reopening time has not yet been established.

A person died and another was hospitalized after a major crash on the GW Parkway on New Year’s Day.

The crash happened around around 11 p.m. on the southbound Parkway near Roosevelt Island and exits to I-66 and Route 50.
