With just days to go until the first round of March Madness, numerous sports bars across Arlington and Falls Church are ready with drinks and bites for sports fans of all stripes.

As establishments offer deals ranging from beers and seltzers to appetizers and wings, here are some local spots to try out while watching this month’s games.

A ballot measure to substantially increase D.C.’s minimum wage would undoubtedly have major effects on Arlington’s neighbor, but the region-wide impacts are murkier.

One Fair Wage’s proposal to raise the District’s minimum wage to $25 per hour by July 2029 has earned support from labor advocates seeking to make D.C. more affordable for the working class, but criticism from business owners worried about going out of business or having to lay off employees.

After 26 years of serving customers at Silver Diner in Arlington, Dorothy Johnson — known to regulars as “Mama D” — is hanging up her uniform.

Johnson will wait on customers for the last time this Saturday (March 7) at the Ballston restaurant, located at 750 N. Glebe Road. Silver Diner will hold a going away party at the restaurant at 1:30 p.m. so coworkers and customers can say their goodbyes, according to a press release.

Freddie’s Beach Bar, the long-running LGBTQ+ bar on Crystal City’s 23rd Street S. restaurant row, is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a party this Sunday.

The March 1 celebration at 555 23rd Street S. is set for 7-9 p.m. and will include music, food, drinks and giveaways, according to a press release.

Long-time Arlington watering hole Rhodeside Grill will be closing its doors next week.

The restaurant, bar and event venue at 1836 Wilson Blvd — around the halfway point between Rosslyn and Courthouse — will serve its last customers on Saturday, Feb. 21, co-owner Chris Lefbom confirmed to ARLnow.

Two restaurants in Arlington and three in Falls Church made the grade in Washingtonian’s new “100 Very Best Restaurants” list.

Regulars in the local dining scene will be familiar with most of these spots, all of which were also highlighted last year. They range from a Vietnamese restaurant in Falls Church’s Eden Center to a popular French-inspired establishment on Langston Blvd.

Falls Church Restaurant Week is back beginning next week, with the largest-ever number of establishments participating.

A record 66 restaurants will participate in the event Friday, Jan. 23 to Sunday, Feb. 1, offering restaurant week menus, special items and other exclusive offers. This is in addition to those participating in Metropolitan Washington Winter Restaurant Week, which returns on Monday.

A cafe and flower shop in Ballston is shuttering after four years, in the latest closure for the neighborhood.

Poppyseed Rye, which sold bouquets and hosted flower arrangement workshops in addition to serving up soups, sandwiches, salads and coffee, is closing its doors for good on Sunday at 818 N. Quincy Street. Founder Scott Parker told ARLnow that business had been down for about five or six months, despite loyal customers in the neighborhood.

More than 20 restaurants in Arlington are slated to participate in Metropolitan Washington Winter Restaurant Week when it returns next Monday.

Hosted biannually in the winter and summer by the Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington, the week features multi-course, prix-fixe menus at participating D.C. area restaurants. This season, it takes place from Monday, Jan. 19 through Sunday, Jan. 25.

A Fairlington-area bakery’s sign advertising a conservative political club has left a bad taste for some local residents.

The sign posted in the window of Great Harvest Bread Company at 1711 Centre Plaza has attracted hundreds of comments on the Reddit page for Northern Virginia and the private Fairlington Appreciation Society Facebook group this week.
