In coming weeks, the four Arlington teams competing during the summer’s popular Northern Virginia Swimming League will learn their placements for 2025.
The seeding meeting to determine the setups of the league’s 17 divisions is scheduled for Sunday, March 2 at Key Middle School in Springfield. Representatives from each of the league’s 102 teams will be present to discuss and arrange the divisions, beginning at 2 p.m.
Of the nine Marymount University Division III winter sports teams, the men’s basketball squad is enjoying the best season so far, with a 7-5 overall record.
The Saints are 1-0 in the Atlantic East Conference, with the squad winning its opening league game by a 67-63 score over the Immaculata University Mighty Macs.
Crowds of cheering supporters thronged Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center on Sunday to celebrate the triumphant return of Olympic gold medalist Torri Huske.
“This Olympics was such an amazing experience,” said Huske, who returned home to Arlington from Paris with three gold medals and two silver medals in swimming events. “It was such an honor representing not only my country, but all of you. And I wanted to let you know that as much as this medal, or all of these medals, are mine, a little piece of it also belongs to you guys — because Arlington helped make me the person I am today.”

Returning to her hometown after a record-setting performance at the Paris Olympic Games — where she won three gold medals and two silver medals in swimming events — Huske will deliver brief remarks and offer autographs and photos for swim fans under 18.

Huske and her fellow women’s 4x100m medley relay final teammates — Regan Smith, Lilly King and Gretchen Walsh — captured gold and set a new world record, all while besting second place Australia by a full 3.5 seconds.

Huske captured silver in the women’s 100m freestyle this afternoon. She led the field near the end but was edged out at the wall by Swedish swimmer Sarah Sjoestroem by 0.07 seconds.
The former board president of an elite youth swim program has been sentenced after pleading guilty to child sex exploitation charges in January.
Arlington resident Mark Black, who previously helped to lead the Olympian-producing Arlington Aquatic Club, was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

The pool area will close at 8 p.m., about two hours early, on weekdays starting next Monday, Jan. 29 to replace leaky pipes and water-damaged ceiling tiles caused by a corroded sprinkler hose, the Arlington County Dept. Parks and Recreation said in a press release. Weekend hours will not be affected.
A former board president of the Arlington Aquatic Club pled guilty today to conspiring to sexually exploit several children.
Mark Black, 50, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to produce child pornography and one count of coercion and enticement one month before he was set to go to trial in federal court on Feb. 27, according to a press release from the U.S. Dept. of Justice.

Mark Black, who is about to turn 50, according to public records, was arraigned in federal court last week. A trial date was set for Feb. 27, 2024.
