With a 6-2 record through eight boys lacrosse matches, the Washington-Liberty Generals are enjoying one of their best starts in program history.

Among the high-school team’s victories were a 11-7 win over private-school Sidwell Friends along with triumphs over Northern Virginia public-school squads West Springfield, 13-8, Marshall, 16-3, Falls Church, 16-5, and South County, 6-3.

A former coach accused of sexually assaulting one of his players at Washington-Liberty High School may avoid any jail time.

George Porcha, 54, was recently acquitted of two sex crime charges involving a former girls basketball player about 25 years ago. He still faces other charges, including carnal knowledge of a 13 to 15-year-old, for alleged acts involving a second player.

Spring break will mean a bit of a layoff for some high-school sports teams, while others will be participating in spring-break competitons over the next 10 days.

Some of that spring-break action will take place locally, while some teams will be participating in out-of-town tournaments.

The start of high-school football season is still a good five full months away, but the official schedules have been released for the upcoming 2025 campaign.

All four Arlington County varsity teams open play on Thursday night, Aug. 28, with two of those squads meeting in their openers.

Last year’s lack of offensive production has been turned around during the recent Washington-Liberty Generals’ winning streak.

During a three-game string, the high-school squad plated 28 runs in victories over the Marshall Statesmen by a 9-4 score, the Herndon Hornets in a 7-0 blanking and the South County Stallions in a 12-3 rout.

With Kaiya Ovando leading the way with two victories, a number of athletes from Arlington schools had top finishes at the multi-team Carolyn Legard Relays at C.G. Woodson High School.

Ovando, of Yorktown High School, won the girls discus and shot put competition with throws of 114-2 and 34-1, respectively, in the day-long track-and-field meet last Saturday (March 29).

What has been a busy three-sport high-school senior year recently included a verbal commitment from Emmett Engelhardt to participate in Division I college athletics.

The runner and basketball player for the Washington-Liberty Generals will attend American University to be a member of the men’s cross-country and indoor and outdoor track-and-field teams, continuing his year-round sports involvement.

For the Cunningham siblings of Arlington, the 2024 fall college sports seasons couldn’t have been more different.

Senior midfielder Caitlin Cunningham, a Washington-Liberty High School graduate, played every match for the Division I George Washington University women’s soccer team and enjoyed one of her best college seasons.

With multiple individual winners, the Washington-Liberty Generals won the girls and boys team titles at the recent Spartan Classic track-and-field meet at Broad Run High School in Ashburn.

The girls won the 13-team event for the second straight year, scoring 141 points. The boys totaled 133.5.

The spring sports season is in full swing, with tons of regular-season action taking place for all of Arlington’s high-school teams.

Baseball, softball, soccer, lacrosse and track-and-field teams are in action, with the spring crew season beginning Saturday, April 5 with a regatta featuring multiple teams.

A standout girls high-school basketball career ended with a final strong performance for Frances Shapiro.

The Washington-Liberty Generals’ senior guard was chosen the Most Valuable Player for the winning 6D North Region squad in one of the two annual season-ending Suburban Classic all-star games played recently at Oakton High School.
