An annual Shirlington holiday tradition is fast-approaching with festive music and family-friendly activities.

The Village at Shirlington’s annual tree lighting celebration begins at 6 p.m. this Thursday, Dec. 5. The event includes horse-drawn carriage rides, photos with Santa, face painting, a makers market and live holiday tunes.

Amid chilly weather and decorations going up around Arlington, the holiday season — and, by extension, Christmas tree sales season — has arrived.

Many tree sales around Arlington will start on Friday and Saturday, right after Thanksgiving. In parks, parking lots and garden centers, the festive firs won’t be hard to find — though some markets encourage early shopping.

The Arlington County Police Department is kicking off its annual toy drive for children in need.

The first of two ACPD collection events is taking place this weekend, and drop boxes were placed around the county last week. As part of its 10th annual “Fill the Cruiser” campaign, the department is seeking new, unwrapped toys for kids up to 17 years old.

Outdoor ice skating is back at the Westpost shopping center in Pentagon City.

The outdoor ice rink at 1201 S. Joyce Street announced yesterday that it has returned for the 2024-2025 season, offering lessons and public skating hours seven days a week. That’s despite predicted high temperatures in the 60s, 70s and — today — 80s over the next ten days.

(Updated at 12:10 p.m.) Arlington is under a Winter Weather Advisory starting tonight.

Between 2-5 inches of snow is expected to fall, mostly overnight Friday into Saturday. The snow should be mostly done by sunrise, according to the Capital Weather Gang.

From witty retellings to hyperlocal stories, Shakespeare to contemporary musicals, a wide range of shows is set to hit Arlington theaters this spring and summer.

Next Thursday is the opening night for the musical “Private Jones” (Feb. 6-March 10) at Signature Theatre. The audience will be taken on a journey, based on a true story, of a deaf Welsh sniper during World War I.

High temperatures in the 60s and 70s for much of the week will not stop a winter tradition in Pentagon City.

The outdoor ice skating rink at 1201 S. Joyce Street officially opened for the season on Wednesday, Nov. 1, a spokesperson for Westpost — the shopping center formerly known as Pentagon Row — confirmed to ARLnow. The opening has yet to be announced on social media.

The National Landing Business Improvement District is planning a ski-themed holiday festival — dubbed “The Lodge” — at Metropolitan Park in Pentagon City, according to a press release.
