District Taco Announces Taco Eating Contest — This sounds like a recipe for some fun, or vomit, or both. District Taco (5723 Lee Highway) will be holding a taco eating contest at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 10. Ten contestants will compete to see who can eat the most tacos (without throwing up — seriously, it’s a rule) in 15 minutes. If you think you’ve got what it takes, fill out an entry form and submit it by Thursday. See more information on the District Taco web site.

Blame Technology for Rising Rents — Has your rent gone up recently? If so, a software program may be to blame. A number of large landlords are now using “sophisticated computerized models” to figure out how to price rentals. Arlington-based AvalonBay Communities, which owns rental communities in Ballston and near Shirlington, recently started widespread use of a software package called “Rainmaker” to squeeze every last dollar out of its properties. Rustico Does Brunch — Rustico’s new Ballston location has launched a Sunday brunch service. Go for the ricotta doughnuts, stay for the oatmeal and coffee-infused beer. More from We Love DC.

Rustico in Ballston is a joke! They never have any of the beers on their menu.

    • mehoo

      How many do you need?

In any event, they say they’ll have cask-conditioned beer soon, which will make all those other beers unnecessary.

      • Jezebel

Is “cask-conditioned” a fancy phrase for ‘in a can’?

      • CJR

My wife and I love Rustico – always a great selection of beers and comfortable atmosphere, but better when not so crowded.

    • Lou

They have a long way to go to catch up to Rock Bottom. The current brewer (and the previous one as well), were top notch guys, both in quality and keeping all the taps going.

I have been to Rustico at lest once, if not twice, a week since they opened their Ballston location. In all my times drinking at the bar I have very rarely had the same beer twice, and I have only once run into a situation where they are out of something that I wanted (in which case I moved onto yet another beer I had never had). I expect a lot from good beers and beer bars, and Rustico Ballston has yet to let me down.

AvalonBay, what a joke, my rent went up $250 a month and gave us 1 month notice.

I learned quickly it’s best to avoid the big places like Avalon and Charles E Smith and instead go with the small places that are just as close to the metro but are way cheaper and have much better service.
My rent just went up $24 for the next year and I was able to get a second assigned parking space for free.

By smaller guys, do you mean Ditmar? They’re still pretty big in the VA Square – Ballston area.

There aren’t many small guys in the R-B area near Metro.

I’ve been living near Columbia Pike and S Courthouse for almost 10 years now and trust me when I say I love the fact that my rent never goes up any more than 30 bucks per year. Even after Virginia Management took over management of our building and undertook a 10-20 million dollar renovation we still have reasonable rent increases.

My biggest fear is one of these larger organizations buying my building.

        • Darwin

For me it’s Ft. Strong properties. I don’t have a fancy marble entrance but I do have 850 square feet with 2 parking spaces and ALL utilities included for (as of this month due to the big $24 increase) $1,405 for the next year. I’m 2 blocks from the metro. I saw one bug once in 3 years, when I called them to report it the next day they had an exterminator go through the entire building.

          • The Dope of South Arlington

You ‘report’ seeing one bug? Just step on it.

          • Juanita de Talmas

Alright! Toxic chemicals spread all over the whole complex thanks to one insect sighting!

    • a’town

what building did they do that in?

    • Shane

Avalon Bay. The same people who vaporized Arna Valley. Precious.

  • Radar

Rustico is a rip off. I wish something else moved in. There are enough bars with beer and American food.

    • Westover

American food in America, we can’t have that can we?

  • NPGMBR

Wow, they really call it Rainmaker? Appropriate since its purpose is to bring the poor peasants in NOVA to tears as they write that monthly rent check. Bastards!

  • Jim Shippey

I just moved from Infinity apartments to the newly rebranded Serrano (both Carmel properties) after Infinity wanted a 17.5% increase. Now I had the hassle of moving again, but with mostly comparable interiors, I am putting another $50/month in my pocket. Rainmaker can choke on it…

Good, this will finally shore the condo market in Arlington back up. And when that happens, SFHs will start to rise at a stronger pace again.
