Local author of acclaimed WWII book speaking at Clarendon Barnes & Noble this weekend

The author of a critically acclaimed book about the harrowing experiences of World War II soldiers and Holocaust survivors is hosting a talk and book signing in Clarendon this weekend.

Arlington resident Nina Willner will pay a visit to the Clarendon Barnes & Noble (2800 Clarendon Blvd) from noon to 2 p.m. this Saturday, June 13, to discuss her narrative nonfiction work, “Boys in the Light.” The book delves into the parallel experiences of her father, Holocaust survivor Eddie Willner, and American soldiers during World War II.

A new season of free events at George Mason University is coming to Virginia Square starting next week.

This year’s lineup of weekly programming — featuring trivia nights, K-pop dance sessions, ping pong, knitting and more — kicks off Monday, June 8 and will last through Aug. 8.

The Michael J. Fox Foundation is hosting a race in the Pentagon City area this weekend, raising funds to support research on Parkinson’s disease.

The race, which participants can either run or walk, will kick off on Sunday morning at Virginia Highlands Park. The following road closures will be in effect:

The annual Lubber Run Summer Concert series kicks off this Saturday, June 6, with concerts held on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Aug. 2 at 200 N. Columbus Street.

The tournament starts next Thursday, June 11, with a lineup of more than 100 games scheduled through Sunday, July 19.

Cycling pros and enthusiasts will be hitting the streets of Arlington this weekend for the return of the Amazon Armed Forces Cycling Classic.

The event, now in its 28th year, will include two days of races on Saturday and Sunday, benefiting the nonprofit Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) — and bringing some road closures.

Two days of vendors, activities and pet-themed fun are returning to Clarendon in an annual market happening this weekend.

Pet Palooza is coming to 2800 Clarendon Blvd from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on May 30-31, bringing pet adoption opportunities, live music and giveaways. More than 50 vendors are expected to participate, offering items like handmade pet accessories, treats and toys.

A locally owned plant shop in Crystal City is celebrating its one-year anniversary this month with giveaways, a market and other activities.

PLNTR, the D.C.-based boutique and nursery known for making an appearance on Season 7 of “Love is Blind,” will host a celebration on Sunday, May 31 at 269 19th Court S. Attractions will include a pop-up market with art and vinyl records and a “flash” tattoo session with Hummingbird Tattoo.

“Summer Stomp” is expected to draw more than a dozen local businesses and organizations next Thursday at Harvey’s, an American restaurant at 513 W. Broad Street.

The writer and mathematician who played Winnie Cooper on “The Wonder Years” will be hosting a book reading for kids at a Pentagon City book fair this weekend.

Danica McKellar, who went on to become a New York Times bestselling author and internationally recognized mathematician following her role on the sitcom, will be reading from her math picture book, “Goodnight, Numbers,” at HQ2 from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

Signature Theatre to follow record year with world premiere, Sondheim co-production

Signature Theatre will try to top its own record-breaking year with a 2026-2027 season featuring a world premiere musical, two Stephen Sondheim productions and the Shirlington theater’s first co-production with Shakespeare Theatre Company.

The lineup, unveiled Tuesday by Artistic Director Matthew Gardiner and Managing Director Maggie Boland, follows a 2025 in which Signature broke sales records alongside fellow Arlington stage Synetic, amid turmoil at the Kennedy Center across the river. The Kennedy Center is set to close for two years of renovations starting in July.

Mobile ‘museum on wheels’ makes Arlington stop for Saturday’s history festival

A traveling “museum on wheels” is rolling into Arlington for the county’s signature celebration of the nation’s 250th birthday.

The Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission’s Mobile Museum Experience — a quad-expandable tractor-trailer housing an exhibit titled “Out of Many, One” — will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday (May 9) at Kenmore Middle School (200 S. Carlin Springs Road) as part of Arlington HistoryFest 250. Admission is free.
