Arlington’s efforts to take a privately owned property on Columbia Pike are attracting mounting criticism.

An Arlington County Board candidate, the Arlington View Civic Association, an anti-Missing Middle group, and the property’s conservator have all taken aim at ongoing eminent domain proceedings at 1802 Columbia Pike.

On Sunday, June 2, Arlington homeowners will host tours of their eco-friendly homes and sustainable gardens for the public at the annual Green Community Celebration & Tour.

These tours offer participants a chance to ask questions and gain clarity on numerable environmental practices.

Homeowners will showcase their green home upgrades, ranging from kitchen technologies to rooftop solar panels, and sustainable gardens that nurture native plants, wildlife habitat and more. Begin your day at Central Library for a Community Welcome Event from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., where you can participate in plant demos, view electric vehicles, and learn energy-saving tips. Afterward, explore the diverse disclosed locations of your neighbors’ green homes during one of the two tour shifts between 12 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Customize your own tour by visiting sites in any order!

Around Town

Alban Odoulamy has been selling puppets out of his shop in the Crystal City Underground for 28 years.

Opening as “La Marionette” in April 1996, that shop — now Puppet Heaven at 1750 Crystal Drive — has shifted locations over decades, but it’s always stayed in the subterranean mall. However, following last month’s announcement that all shops must vacate the shopping area, what Odoulamy says is the D.C. area’s only dedicated puppet store is one of many businesses in need of a new home.

For weeks, every time Mike Najarro attempted to log into the federal student aid portal, he received an error message about server maintenance.

The Washington-Liberty High School senior watched with growing anxiety as the portal faltered, concerned these technical delays could thwart his chance to be the first in his family to attend college.

(Updated at 3:30 p.m.) New York-based ice cream chain Van Leeuwen expects to open its Crystal City location next month.

The shop will occupy retail space underneath The Grace, the new apartment tower at 269 19th Court S. The shop is planning on an early June opening.
