Obituary: Kenneth Lee Lackey (1952-2024)

Kenneth Lackey, 71, Arlington, VA, passed away on March 31, 2024, due to complications from Parkinson’s and a stroke.

Ken was a beloved husband, father, cousin and friend. He will be remembered for his absolute pride in his children, his warmth and kindness, his enthusiasm for sports, his knowledge of history, his love of a true Maryland Crab Cake and (almost) all things Old Bay. The strength and resilience he showed fighting Parkinson’s for 12 years was inspiring to everyone.

Arlington police to give out free devices to curb auto theft

Amid a continued elevated number of vehicle thefts, compared to pre-pandemic levels, Arlington County police are giving away free anti-theft devices.

A pair of upcoming giveaway events will take place on Wednesday, April 17 and Tuesday, April 23 in church parking lots. Police will distribute one steering wheel lock to each vehicle owner who lives in Arlington and shows up to the event, while supplies last.

NEW: Caps and Arlington County discussing modernizing the Capitals Iceplex in Ballston

With a half-billion dollar deal to modernize and expand Capital One Arena in place, the Washington Capitals are now mulling their future at the MedStar Capitals Iceplex in Ballston.

ARLnow has learned that the team recently started talking to Arlington County about potential modernizations and improvements to the 137,000 square foot, county-owned facility. The Iceplex opened in 2006 and serves as the Caps’ official NHL practice facility and headquarters, as well as the home ice for college, high school and beer league hockey teams.

Eclipse Viewing for APS Students — “All students in Arlington Public Schools will receive protective solar-viewing glasses for the partial solar eclipse that will take place Monday afternoon, according to an update that Superintendent Dr. Francisco Durán sent APS families on Wednesday.” [Patch]

Teen Arrested for ‘Street Takeover’ — “Several people have been identified and charged in connection to a ‘street takeover’ in Springfield on Sunday (March 31). The Fairfax County Police Department announced today (Wednesday) that detectives arrested and charged an 18-year-old man from Woodbridge and a 17-year-old Arlington [boy] who allegedly took part in a rowdy ‘mob’ in a parking lot in the 6600 block of Electronic Drive around 3 a.m.” [FFXnow]

ACPD: Seven juveniles charged after armed robbery, multiple foot chases in Pentagon City

A group of juvenile suspects is facing an array of charges following a reported armed robbery in Pentagon City.

The incident happened around 4:45 p.m. on Easter Sunday in the area of the Westpost shopping center. Police say a teen girl had just parked when two girls from a group of seven juvenile suspects stole her keys, leading to a confrontation in which the suspects threatened the victim with pepper spray and what turned out to be an airsoft gun.
