As the sun peeked over the horizon this morning, nearly 1,500 shadows danced across Arlington National Cemetery’s 639 acres as soldiers placed flags at each grave, including of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Starting at 6 a.m., members of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, the Army’s oldest active-duty infantry unit — known as the “Old Guard” — began the solemn task of placing flags at the base of approximately 260,000 headstones as part of their annual “Flags In” tradition, held just before Memorial Day.

The pizzeria, which boasts a unique twist on traditional pizza offerings, shuttered at 3444 Fairfax Drive on Saturday after battling the longstanding effects of the pandemic, franchisee Ernie Harris said.
Starbucks is expanding at the Lee Heights Shops.
Construction is currently in progress to add the former storefront of Facets Fine Jewelry to the current footprint of the Starbucks at 4526 Cherry Hill Road.

Alban Odoulamy has been selling puppets out of his shop in the Crystal City Underground for 28 years.
Opening as “La Marionette” in April 1996, that shop — now Puppet Heaven at 1750 Crystal Drive — has shifted locations over decades, but it’s always stayed in the subterranean mall. However, following last month’s announcement that all shops must vacate the shopping area, what Odoulamy says is the D.C. area’s only dedicated puppet store is one of many businesses in need of a new home.
(Updated at 3:30 p.m.) New York-based ice cream chain Van Leeuwen expects to open its Crystal City location next month.
The shop will occupy retail space underneath The Grace, the new apartment tower at 269 19th Court S. The shop is planning on an early June opening.

A new high-end sushi restaurant appears to be coming to Pentagon City.
The realty management company Rappaport announced on its website that the creators behind Gyu Shige Japanese BBQ & Bar in Fairfax’s Mosaic District have leased about 2,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space below the Sage at National Landing, a 306-unit multifamily building at 480 11th Street S.
A new restaurant and bar has opened at the former site of Rebellion on the Pike.
Cornerstone opened its doors last month at 2900 Columbia Pike, serving up hearty plates like chicken pot pie, beef chili and seafood pasta along with beers, wines and signature cocktails at its full bar.
