Arlington Pet of the Week: Patches

Becky's Pet Care

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Patches, a 5-year-old French bulldog who loves to watch Law and Order marathons and sunbathe.

Here is what her owner, Jean Marie, had to say:

I’d like to introduce you to Patches, our 5 year old French Bulldog. She has been an Arlington resident ever since we picked her up from West Virginia in 2013 when she was just a 16 week old pup. She has lived in Ballston, Rosslyn, Courthouse, and is now permanently settled in our first house in South Arlington. My husband and I (not married at the time) had decided we wanted a French Bulldog, but we were going to wait until the Spring…until I came across Patches’ pictures online. When we reached out, the breeder, and owners of Patches’ parents, let us know that they had actually decided to keep her as a pet, but they had forgotten to take the picture of her down from their website. I was crushed at first, but then decided I would just have to be somewhat persistent and let them know how much we had fallen in love with the pictures we saw online. They finally gave us the OK to come see her, and we just knew that we’d be coming home with her. From that moment, we were absolutely in love!

She likes to see who the Pet of the Week is each week, and finally, we thought we’d submit her as we feel she is well deserving of the title!

Patches is a purebred Frenchie who is super affectionate and fun, and loves meeting new people and pups. She enjoys Law and Order marathons, sunbathing wherever she can, lots of snuggles, brief walks around the neighborhood, and giving humans the stare-down when you’re in possession of bacon – or any food for that matter. She is such a fun loving dog who can brighten anyone’s day. If you’re feeling under the weather, she’s also a very qualified caretaker who will snuggle with you all day long.

Patches is very much looking forward to the warmer weather, when she can frolic around the neighborhood, do some patio entertaining, and provide oversight while grilling out.

Arlington Pet of the Week: Finley

Becky's Pet Care

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Finley, a 5-month-old mixed breed puppy rescued from Mississippi who likes snuggling and digging.

Here is what his owner, Holly, had to say:

This if Finley the Rescue Puppy. He is a rescue from Mississippi, brought to Northern Virginia after the hurricane season by Wolf Trap Animal Rescue out of Vienna, VA. We adopted him on October 21, 2017. He is a mixed breed puppy (currently 5 months) with an ancestry of Boston Terrier, Boxer and other Terrier breeds. Finley was adopted two years after we lost our last dog friend, Riggs, who was 14 when he passed away. It took our family a long time to be emotionally ready for another dog, but once we saw Finley, we knew it was time and that he would be the perfect fit.

In the months that we’ve had him, he as been a joy to our family. He is a snuggler and very trainable. Because of his mixed breed ancestry, he can do a little bit of everything. He, of course, has some of the negative traits of his breeds, such as digging, boxing, and resource aggression, but he has the potential to be an agility star and to guard our family well.

He doesn’t shed, sleeps through the night, and is a great listener. We are looking forward to the warm weather of the Spring and the completion of his vaccinations, so that we can take him to dog parks. Luckily, we have many friends and neighbors who have also gotten puppies, so he has lots of opportunities for socialization. We feel blessed to have found a rescue that fits so perfectly in our family. Many thanks to Wolf Trap Animal Rescue!

Arlington Pet of the Week: Baxter

Becky's Pet Care

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Baxter, a 10-month-old Golden Retriever who likes to go to the Shirlington dog park and watch Animal Planet.

Here is what his owner Rachel had to say:

Baxter is a good boy. He is a 10 month old Golden Retriever who lives in Court House. He loves to play outside with his friends, and you can usually find him on the bottom of the puppy pile! He likes to go to Shirlington Dog Park or take a walk to the Iwo Jima Memorial when the weather is nice.

Baxter has a unique love of his crate and belly rubs! His favorite treats are Earth Animal No-Hides and Himalayan Churpi Chews. His TV programs so far have been the Westminster Kennel Club dog show, FSU basketball games, and Animal Planet. He barks at the lions when they are on the hunt.

His “type” is corgis because they are fluffy and his best friend Rocket is a corgi! Baxter likes when Mama works at home because he gets more treats. Feel free to follow Baxter and his friendly adventures on Instagram @BaxterBabbs.

Arlington Pet of the Week: Gigi

Becky's Pet Care

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Gigi, a 3-year-old Bombay cat who enjoys wet food and strings of any kind.

Here is what her owner Alexandra had to say:

Gigi is a three-ish Bombay beauty who lives in Arlington, VA with her parents Frank and Alexandra. She has been a VA resident for longer than her parents and loves to show them how locals live. Gigi was adopted from Animal Welfare League of Arlington (AWLA) in September of 2016. Though barely older than a kitten herself, she had given birth to a litter of kittens prior to being adopted into the O’Donnell-Fee household. Still she has retained her kitten-like spirit and is conquering her remaining pregnancy fat by working out intensely at 3 a.m.

Gigi likes wet food in any fish flavor, strings of any kind, and her special chair in the living room. She does not like scratches on the butt or when new people neglect to greet her at the door. Her biggest dream is escaping down the hallway of the apartment floor she lives on, but she is afraid of the carpet. When she grows up, Gigi wants to be a celebrity chef mostly so she can sit around in the grocery bags.

Pet of the Week: Bernard

Becky's Pet Care

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Bernard, a rooster who likes to hold crowing contests with other roosters and learn new tricks.

Here is what his caretaker Kelly had to say:

Hi there! My name is Bernard and I am a cute and adorable rooster! I was found abandoned as a stray in Arlington, during the midst of the freezing cold spell several weeks ago.

By the time animal control discovered me, I had already developed moderate frostbite on my lovely comb. I was transferred to the Fairfax animal shelter, where I sat alone and waited for somebody to want to adopt me.

Normally this would have taken many weeks to months, but thankfully, my new mom saw that I was in need of adoption through Adopt a Bird Network — a local startup non-profit which helps promote the presence of adoptable backyard fowl in animal shelters nationwide.

I was so incredibly happy when I saw her smile at me for the first time and scoop me up into her arms. I think that day will forever be the happiest day of my life… I am so thankful she found me.

Now I live with a group of other rescued and adopted roosters from the area, where we peacefully co-exist in our own little ‘bachelor flock’, within a predator-proofed enclosure.

My favorite activities are being cuddled by my new mom, crowing contests with the other roosters, my daily supervised free ranging sessions with a couple lady hens and learning tricks. Right now I am being taught how to jump through a hula hoop!

Please consider opening your heart to other roosters like me — there are so many of us who are dumped by backyard chicken owners, as soon as they discover we are males and not females.

In 2017 there was close to 2,500 of us throughout the different Virginia shelters, which is a two-fold increase from 2016. There is a huge misconception about us for we are every bit affectionate as a dog or cat and make wonderful companions as house roosters, protectors of hens, and can peacefully co-exist with multiple roosters. Oh and follow Adopt a Bird Network too.

Pet of the Week: Pistachio

Becky's Pet Care

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Pistachio, an English Cocker Spaniel who enjoys a good tooth brushing and a nice long walk every now and then.

Here is what his owner Casey had to say:

Say hello to the cutest little nut in Arlington – Pistachio! He also likes to go by Mr. P, or ‘P’ for short.

Pistachio loves to go on long walks, visits to the dog park, and learning new tricks. One could say that Pistachio is an outgoing pup, because he loves meeting new people and dogs! Any time we are out on a walk, Pistachio is the center of attention. Our family and extended family all have dogs, so Pistachio loves going to family events for all of the extra play time (and treats).

Pistachio also enjoys snuggles, giving a million kisses, having his teeth brushed, and spreading out in his parent’s bed. He’s still learning to behave around food and to not eat everything he finds on the floor, but hey! Being a puppy is hard work!

Pistachio has become so entertaining that we found we needed to share his adventures with everyone we know – feel free to follow him on Instagram at @pistachio_theenglishcocker.

Pet of the Week: Daisy Mae Revel

Becky's Pet Care

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Daisy Mae Revel, a yellow lab who loves to play fetch for hours and make friends at Glencarlyn Park.

Here is what her owner Alex had to say:

Daisy Mae Revel came into our lives on March 13, 2016. My husband surprised me with Daisy while proposing at The Winery at La Grange. Around her neck was a collar and he asked me to put the tag on, which said “Will you marry my daddy?”

Daisy is the most loving, caring and fun yellow lab. She loves playing with all of her toys especially her Starbucks Puppuccino toy, she can play fetch for hours and any time she sees water she has to immediately jump in! On the weekends you can find Daisy playing with her friends at Glencarlyn Park, walking around Clarendon with her mom and dad, or laying on her bed (also known as the family room couch because she’s the Princess and the Pea).

Pet of the Week: Sherman

Becky's Pet Care

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Sherman, a Corgi who loves trips to the Clarendon dog park and is quick to make friends.

Here is what his owner Julie had to say:

Meet Sherman — the cutest little Corgi in Arlington.

Sherman (commonly known as Sherm, Shermie, Shermando, or Shermberger) can be found taking walks in Rosslyn, frolicking at the Clarendon Dog Park, or hanging out with his mom and dad.

Sherman loves his fellow pups, especially Piper, Winnie, Roo, and Nola, and is always eager to make new friends, both canine and human.

When he’s not outside, Sherman enjoys playing with toys from his BarkBox, eating cheese, and guilting mom and dad to let him snuggle on the bed with them.

Arlington Pet of the Week: Sammie

Becky's Pet Care

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Sammie, an adopted Carolina dog.

Here she had to say about her life so far:

Hi! My name is Sammie and I’m a 1.5-year-old Carolina dog. My parents adopted me from Last Chance Rescue when I was just 5 months old.

People originally thought I was a shepherd mix but my parents realized I was a Carolina dog when they matched my dingo appearance with my cat-like tendencies.

Except, I love other dogs. Every time I see one, I forget what I’m supposed to do and I lie on my belly hoping for playtime.

I don’t bark but I sing when requested. I’m a picky eater but I love peanut butter and chicken. I’m also an avid hiker and runner; probably one of the fastest dogs you’ll ever meet.

I live for car rides too. Sticking my face outside the window is the best feeling ever. At home, I destroy stuffed animals – they never mess with me.

We live in Courthouse so when the weather is nice, I go running with my parents (really just my dad) to Georgetown and Clarendon. I love living here! I guess I’m a city girl, not a country mouse.

Arlington Pet of the Week: Basil

Becky's Pet Care

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Basil, a 3-month-old Pembroke Welsh Corgi.

Here is what his owner Mike had to say:

Meet Basil — a sweet 3-month-old Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Basil was born in Pennsylvania but now enjoys living in Arlington.

Basil’s favorite thing about Arlington is all the other dogs! He enjoys meeting new friends while grabbing lunch in Shirlington and then heading to the dog park where he can put his natural herding instincts to good use.

When Basil isn’t out making new friends he enjoys staying at home and playing with his older sister Rutabaga. They love to wrestle and take naps. They are especially adept at destroying socks.

Basil is currently training for the American Kennel Club “Canine Good Citizen” test! He knows many tricks but is still working to master “go do the laundry” and “take out the trash.” What he lacks in homemaking skills he more than makes up for in cuddles and kisses.

Basil has brought so much joy to his new family in the first four short weeks that he has been home, and is sure to do the same for years to come.

Arlington Pet of the Week: Luna

Becky's Pet Care

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Luna, a 5-year-old from Puerto Rico.

Here is what her owner Christina had to say:

Luna is a very good girl! She grew up in Puerto Rico and made her way to the D.C. area through Lucky Dog Animal Rescue.

She is around 5 years old and is a beautiful, if somewhat unusual-looking, mutt of mysterious origins (yellow lab? beagle? dachshund? who knows).

Her specialty is napping anywhere, anytime, dreaming of treats and chasing squirrels. She’s very chill and easygoing and is often mistaken for a senior citizen due to her relaxed nature.

She adores all humans (because humans feed her) except for the mailman, alas, who is her eternal nemesis.

Luna loves to curl up for a long car ride, make new doggie and human friends in the Shirlington Dog Park and sunbathe.

Arlington Pet of the Week: Hamilton

Becky's Pet Care

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Hamilton, a 4-month-old Vizsla.

Here is what he had to say about his life so far:

My name is Hamilton and I am a 4-month-old Vizsla. My Dad likes to call me Hammy, Hamsandwich, Hamdawg, Hamhawk, or Hamster.

I was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania but I am not a Steelers fan. I am a fan of all D.C. sports teams, especially the Washington Redskins and Capitals because I can easily “Rock the Red.”

My favorite activities include playing outside, sticking my nose where it doesn’t belong and watching my dad eat dinner. With my free time I can be found at the Shirlington Dog Park or on my favorite couch licking the bottoms of my paws because they smell like Frito Lay chips.

I live an active lifestyle so I frequently go out to various parks to avoid the pupperazzi. I care a lot about animal rights, human rights, and the planet as a whole. To protect the earth from global warming I have taught my Dad to pick up after me.

If you ever see me, please say hi. I would love to meet you!

Arlington Pet of the Week: Sherlock

Becky's Pet Care

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Sherlock, a Beagle mix.

Here is what he had to say about his life so far:

Hi! My name’s Sherlock and I’m a Beagle mix. I was born in Southern Virginia but found my way up to Arlington after Lucky Dog Rescue was nice enough to save me from a life on the streets.

My mommy adopted me when I was 10 months old because she fell in love with my smile, little bobtail, and SUPER soft fur. I had a lot of energy and was quite the handful at first!

After a few months of training and growing up (and lots of peanut butter and chicken treats), I calmed down and settled into my life with my mommy.

I love living in Arlington because everyone is so friendly and there are plenty of parks and woods for me to run around and chase squirrels and rabbits.

I also enjoy rolling on my back in the sunshine and playing with my friends, Madi and Kimba. I get kind of jealous when Madi plays with Kimba because I have a not-so-secret crush on Madi.

Even though I’m 40 pounds, I think I’m a lap dog and I enjoy sitting in the middle console in the car and on the passenger’s lap while going for drives with my mommy and her friends.

I love people and will always greet them and welcome a snuggle or pat on the head. My favorite is when we go hiking and when we go to visit my grandparents and their cat, Cricket, who I love but I’m not so sure she loves me because she’s always hiding from me.

Life is good, and I’m so happy to have my mommy who I cuddle with and sleep next to every night. I can’t wait for more hikes and playing in the snow this winter!

Arlington Pet of the Week: Riley

Becky's Pet Care

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Riley, a mini Goldendoodle puppy.

Here is what her owner Erica had to say:

Riley is a very friendly 3-month-old mini Goldendoodle puppy weighing in at only 5 pounds (for now). She has brought so much love and joy to us, even more than we could imagine!

One of the best things about her is coming home to her (she can easily turn a frown upside down!). She runs right to the door to greet you and is just so excited with so much love to give!

She is originally from Indiana and now lives with us here in Virginia! Riley absolutely LOVES humans! We don’t get very far on our walks just yet because she wants a belly rub from everyone, literally EVERYONE.

Her favorite pose is laying on her back giving you her puppy eyes so she gets those amazing belly rubs that she loves so much. When she gets overly excited and meets someone for the first time she might even pee just a bit! We’re working on that. However, she is so cute (as described by many as a little teddy bear) no one seems to mind!

Many people have tried to offer us things in exchange for her (even the people at the vet!), since everyone falls in love with her the second that they meet her! We don’t blame them; we did too!

Riley’s absolute favorite toys are her alligator and her lobster. When Riley wakes up in the morning and comes to have breakfast with us she makes sure to go back and get them one at a time from her crate so that they can join us too (they can NOT be left out!).

They always need to be in the same room at all times with her. Some of Riley’s other favorite things are almond butter, cheerios, kissing attacks, and finding the coziest places to take naps! Like I said Riley loves EVERYONE so if you ever see her walking feel free to come up and say hi!!!

You can also follow her on Instagram at @missrileydood to watch her grow!

Arlington Pet of the Week: Willow

Becky's Pet Care

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Willow, a 2-year-old Yorkshire terrier.

Here is what she had to say about her life so far:

Hello! I’m Willow and I’m 2 years old. Some people say I look like an Ewok, but I’m actually a Yorkshire Terrier. Seeing as my mom is a huge Disney fan, she named me after Grandmother Willow from Pocahontas.

In my spare time I like to play with all my toys (as you can see in my picture) and lay down with my parents. My daily struggle is debating if I love playing with my rope or ball more.

I also enjoy dressing up. My favorite outfit of choice is my white lifeguard sweatshirt from Bethany Beach.

When people meet me they are surprised because I am a quiet Yorkie. I was taught as a puppy not to yap. But if we are playing with toys or you come knocking at my door, then you might hear a little bark or growl!

When I grow up, I hope to be a famous soccer player. My Aunt Bee taught me everything I know. In one of my pictures, I am practicing my soccer pose for when I become famous.

I hope to meet you around Arlington!
