Arlington Pet of the Week: Schrodinger

Becky's Pet Care

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Schrodinger, a Korat cat from Pentagon City who loves tuna.

Here’s what Schrodinger’s owner, Adam, had to say about her:

Schrodinger is a Korat in Pentagon City that was born way back in 2002.

Schrodinger is obviously named after the quantum physics thought experiment in which a cat is placed in a box with some sort of poison. Until the box is opened, when it is discovered that the cat is either alive or dead, the cat is considered both alive and dead simultaneously. Neither Schrodinger nor her owner still have any idea what that means.

Despite her advancing age, Schrodinger is still spry and loves playing with our other two cats. She also has an unhealthy obsession with tuna and whenever she hears the can opener, the alarm sound from Kill Bill goes off in her head and she goes berserk. Other favorite activities include lying on her Washington Football Team blanket, providing her owner with hairballs, drooling when happy, and looking at things.

Arlington Pet of the Week: Oshie

Becky's Pet Care

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Oshie, a 4-year-old rescue who cheered for the Washington Capitals with her family during the Stanley Cup Final last week.

Here’s what Oshie’s owner, Heather, had to say about her:

This is Oshie! Yes, she is named after our beloved Washington Capitals player, T.J. Oshie. Oshie is a 4 year old, 25 pound ball of energy. We adopted her from Lucky Dog Rescue last year. She loves Arlington and the Washington Capitals. She enjoys long walks, hiking, playing fetch, playing with other dogs, snuggling and barking at the mailman. She hates the vacuum cleaner and the Pittsburg Penguins. She also enjoys chasing her kitty sister and hopes one day they will be friends. But by far, her favorite thing to do is to snuggle up on a family member’s lap to watch Capitals games!

We couldn’t be happier with our newest addition to our family. Shout out to Lucky Dog for helping us find such a wonderful dog.

Arlington Pet of the Week: Weasley

Becky's Pet Care

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Weasley, a 6-year-old rescue who loves to accompany his owner on road trips.

Here’s what Weasley’s owner, Kristin, had to say about him:

This is Weasley, a 6-year old rescue who we believe is Maine Coon and Turkish Angora. He has all of the good qualities of a cat, combined with the good qualities of a dog. He is super affectionate, but also very smart; he knows commands, greets you at the door, and plays fetch (if he is in the mood). He loves his toy bear, belly and cheek rubs, naps, and treats. Weas loves to pounce on his toys, especially ribbons or catnip toys. That’s why we call him a little lion cub (plus he has an amazing mane).

He has traveled with his mom to multiple destinations and is the best road-trip companion. He just sits in his seat and looks out the window. It’s always funny to see people double take when they realize he is a cat. He really thinks he is a human. Anyone who thinks they don’t like cats will change their mind if they meet this fluffer!

Arlington Pet of the Week: Hannah

Becky's Pet Care

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Hannah, a 2.5-year-old Jack Russell mix looking for new friends in Courthouse.

Here’s what her owner, Richard, had to say on her behalf:

My name is Hannah and I’m a Jack Russell mix. I live in the Courthouse area of Arlington and I can be regularly seen looking for attention from human and dog friends alike, especially in the elevator of my building.

I am 2 and a half years old, and came to my forever home from a local shelter around my first birthday. When I first arrived at my new home, I didn’t know what a toy or a treat was – but now they are two of my favorite things!

I used to be very timid and afraid of everything, but am now incredibly brave and love adventures of all sorts. I especially love to be chased around the local dog park, and to go for long walks in the neighborhood with my dad. I really hate the rain, so am looking forward to the warm weather to arrive so I can be outside more often and meet lots of new friends!

Arlington Pet of the Week: Taz

Becky's Pet Care

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Taz, a 10-year-old cat who loves sleeping on laps and has a nightly yowling ritual.

Here’s what his owner, Rachael, had to say:

This adorable green-eyed wonder’s name is Taz! He is a little over 10 years old and he and his sister Rox (not pictured) were adopted from Animal Care and Control in San Francisco, CA when he was roughly 2 months old. After a very exciting road trip across the country, he now lives in Arlington and enjoys avoiding the snow every winter and the heat and humidity every summer.

This stud has a lot to say and he sure likes to speak his mind! He’s developed a specific “meow” for everything including voicing his displeasure, desires, and his nightly yowling ritual. He is also very handsy and likes to reach and grab for everything he wants. It’s like having a pet raccoon, really. He can pick up a piece of kibble from the ground, lift it to his face, and eat it right out of his paw! He often tries to do this with anything anyone is eating.

One thing that Taz does not like is being outdoors. Taking walks on a harness? Hates it. Sitting on the balcony on a sunny day? Nope. Watching wildlife? He’d rather just stare at his mom and dad. Things that Taz absolutely loves is being around people. He loves being carried around the house and sleeping in laps. In fact, if you just look at him, it will cause him to start purring. He’s definitely our special little guy!

Arlington Pet of the Week: Fallyn

Becky's Pet Care

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Fallyn, a pit bull who enjoys going to the vet and taking on squirrel hunting missions.

Here’s what her owner, Lauren, had to say:

I had initially been fostering Fallyn from Bully Paws rescue, but it didn’t take long for me to fall in love with her. I ended up adopting her shortly after becoming her foster, and she’s been a permanent fixture on my couch ever since.

Fallyn is extremely affectionate and wants to be loved by everyone. She takes personal offense to anyone who doesn’t stop to pet her while walking by, but luckily most people do. She makes an immediate connection with everyone she meets, and is so gentle and loving. She even enjoys going to the vet because there, she is the center of attention, which is where she prefers to be.

Fallyn lives a very pampered lifestyle. Her interests include long walks through Arlington, aka squirrel hunting missions, but only if it’s warm and sunny outside, as she refuses to go out in the rain, snow, or even if it’s just slightly too cold. She is a professional napper, treat eater, and stuffed toy destroyer. She is also clearly very health conscious, because her favorite toy is a stuffed carrot.

Fallyn has many special talents, including her ability to nap anywhere. Whether it be in the car, or in the middle of a hike, she is very good at laying down and immediately falling asleep. She also is very good at squeezing her 60 pound body into the smallest parts of the couch, just to sit next to her favorite people. It’s hard to be upset around Fallyn, because she has a way of always making you laugh. She is the sweetest dog I have ever met, and all she wants is love, which she gets plenty of at home.

Arlington Pet of the Week: West

Becky's Pet Care

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is West, a 5-year-old cat who was found in an abandoned cabin in West Virginia and enjoys sitting on laptops.

Here’s what her owner, Marilyn, had to say:

Hi! I’m West, a 5 year old lovable cat. My family found me 3 years ago in an abandoned cabin in West Virginia. They took me home and I’m now officially their pet. I live with Angie, Brinton, Marilyn, Mark, Lucas, and a puppy, Sierra. I don’t like Sierra because she takes attention away from me. Even though I am mean to her, she still loves me.

If you ever need your laptop to be sit on, I’m your cat. My family doesn’t like me to sit on theirs because I delete all of their files. I also enjoy destroying earbuds and pencils. At night I cuddle with my mom, but if she moves, I bite her. If you’re looking for me I’m usually in my dad’s sock drawer, on top of the printer, or staring down the dog. Even though I don’t have claws I can still kill mice and chipmunks.

I can be a bit of a pain sometimes, but my family loves me dearly. Without me, they would be missing out on one amazing cat.

Arlington Pet of the Week: Adobe Creative Cat

Becky's Pet Care

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Adobe Creative Cat, a 4-year-old Doll Face Persian who prefers playing with garbage over his many cat toys.

Here is what his owners, Laura and Jeff, had to say:

Born in Kuwait and relocated to America by Homeward Trails Animal Rescue, Adobe Creative Cat was adopted by two graphic designers in May 2017 and given a very nerdy name. Although it took some time for him to adapt to his new life, he now demands attention by rolling around on Mr. Human’s hands while he’s trying to work from home and is happiest when he’s being carried on Mrs. Human’s hip like a human toddler as she takes care of household chores.

Adobe’s hobbies include loudly complaining when he realizes no one is looking at him, watching videos of birds and squirrels on YouTube, escaping from his apartment and scurrying down the hallway when his humans try to catch him, marching in place on Mrs. Human’s belly while she’s trying to sleep, and playing with random scraps of garbage he finds on the floor instead of with his plethora of cat toys.

He’s very active on social media, and often shows off his plump belly and loud voice on his own Instagram account.

Arlington Pet of the Week: Ollie

Becky's Pet Care

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Ollie, a 3-year-old Pekingese/Shih Tzu mix who enjoys stealing socks and chasing his ballerina hippo.

Here is what his owner, Georgina, had to say:

This is Ollie (short for Oliver), a hairy 3-year-old Pekingese/Shih Tzu mix from Rockville, MD. Ollie is a staple in the Clarendon area, often seen plopped on the busy sidewalks with his arms tucked in. Ollie is an independent three-year-old but loves to cuddle with mom’s friends and family.

Ollie’s favorite locations include James Hunter dog park where he chases the big dogs, is more interested cuddling up with the humans on the benches and drinking water as his leisure; the stores at Market Common where he can smell the treats behind the registers from far away and of course home.

You can find Ollie acting as the Chinese Emperor’s guard dog at home protecting his home, chasing after his ballerina hippo, stealing human’s socks, or sunbathing on the balcony.

His favorite place to hide is under his mom’s bed and favorite hangout spot is the Persian carpet in the living room.

Arlington Pet of the Week: Gordon

Becky's Pet Care

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Gordon, an 8-year-old toy Yorkshire Terrier who loves chasing his ball and barking at squirrels.

Here is what his owner, Marissa, had to say:

Hi! My name is Gordon – I’m a toy Yorkie and Arlington’s newest resident. I just moved from Sterling to Waverly Hills with my parents, and I’m excited to meet all my new two- and four-pawed neighbors.

While I might look like a puppy, I’m actually 8 years old! I like to think the many hours I spend chasing my ball have contributed to my puppish charm.

Besides playing, I love napping on the couch, barking at squirrels and getting my belly rubbed. I also like hanging out in the kitchen, because if I stare at my mom long enough she usually drops something.

I can’t wait for warm weather so I can take walks down to Ballston. If you see me, come say hi! I love the attention!

Arlington Pet of the Week: Bear

Becky's Pet Care

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Bear, a kitten who loves chasing lasers and being social with other cats.

Here is what his foster owner, Gina, had to say:

Bear is one of the hottest young kittens in Arlington. He’s small, dark, and handsome, with the perfect amount of floof. He’s committed to fitness, and enjoys running and playing both in his apartment and on his harness outdoors. And, he’s no wallflower. He’s been growing his network, engaging in playdates both with his peers and with more experienced cats in Northern Virginia.

It’s no surprise that Bear is becoming such a success on the NOVA kitty social circuit. He’s an alum of the prestigious Animal Welfare League of Arlington’s Kitten College, a program for neonatal kittens. He and his four litter mates learned not only impeccable manners and sharing, but how to eat, use a litter box, and make excellent biscuits under the watchful eye of his foster mom, Gina.

Bear’s adventurous and goofy charm made keeping him as a permanent resident irresistible. He’s now known as a “foster fail” and continues to live at Gina’s place in North Arlington. Look for Bear on one of his outdoor adventures. Or, maybe you’ll spy him playing fetch or chasing lasers with Gina’s boyfriend’s dog. In any event, don’t be intimidated by Bear’s glorious grey mane. This floofy fellow is thrilled to make new friends and acquaintances.

Arlington Pet of the Week: Klaus

Becky's Pet Care

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Klaus, a 3-year-old Maine Coon mix who enjoys jumping in the bathtub and receiving a nice grooming.

Here is what his owner, Sarah, had to say:

This is Klaus, a fluffy 3-year old Maine Coon mix adopted from Bourbon County Rescue in Germantown, MD. He is named in honor of his owner’s study-abroad host parents, Kitty and Klaus, and pricks up his ears whenever he hears German. Typical of Maine Coons, Klaus loves water, regularly jumping into the shower or batting his paws around in his water dish. Klaus enjoys a good snuggle, so if he discovers that a closed door is blocking him from his human, he will sing the song of his people until she open the door for him. In his copious amounts of free time, Klaus loves to chirp and yowl at birds and squirrels from his favorite perch on the windowsill.

A purrfect day for Klaus includes munching on lots of food and sunning himself outside on the balcony. He’s a bit of a cowardly lion, though… one flutter of the American flag and he will scamper all 18 lbs. of himself under the patio furniture faster than you can say ‘scared-y cat’. He’s easily coaxed from hiding, however, with one look at his brush and will lumber over to receive a nice grooming, during which he will flop over and purr loudly. After his version of a spa day is complete, he will find the nearest blanket, kneed it for five minutes, stretch out on top of it, and promptly fall asleep. Such is the life of Klaus!

Arlington Pet of the Week: Hops

Becky's Pet Care

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Hops, an Australian cattle dog mix who likes to wear costumes and eat healthy treats.

Here is what his owner, Michael, had to say:

Hops has been an Arlington native for the past 6 years, and loves showing off his collection of scarves and bandannas on long walks through the Clarendon restaurant scene. An Australian Cattle Dog mix, Hops was rescued from a local adoption agency, and spent the first few years of his life taking his anxiety out on carpets, couches, and comforters. Fortunately, he has finally learned the world is not ending when Master goes to work, and now enjoys long naps, healthy treats, and getting his belly rubbed.

Hops loves the Holidays, whether it is putting on a costume for Halloween, or getting dressed up in red, white, and blue swag for Independence Day. He is super lucky to have his cousin Banjo (a Shepard mix) living nearby, and spends every Sunday at his (human) grandparent’s house running around the yard, wagging his tail, and being scared of the refrigerator.

With his thick fur coat, Hops likes cold weather, but can’t wait for spring to come so he can spend more time outside exploring Ballston and hanging out on the outdoor patios of his favorite Arlington restaurants.

Arlington Pet of the Week: Patches

Becky's Pet Care

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Patches, a 5-year-old French bulldog who loves to watch Law and Order marathons and sunbathe.

Here is what her owner, Jean Marie, had to say:

I’d like to introduce you to Patches, our 5 year old French Bulldog. She has been an Arlington resident ever since we picked her up from West Virginia in 2013 when she was just a 16 week old pup. She has lived in Ballston, Rosslyn, Courthouse, and is now permanently settled in our first house in South Arlington. My husband and I (not married at the time) had decided we wanted a French Bulldog, but we were going to wait until the Spring…until I came across Patches’ pictures online. When we reached out, the breeder, and owners of Patches’ parents, let us know that they had actually decided to keep her as a pet, but they had forgotten to take the picture of her down from their website. I was crushed at first, but then decided I would just have to be somewhat persistent and let them know how much we had fallen in love with the pictures we saw online. They finally gave us the OK to come see her, and we just knew that we’d be coming home with her. From that moment, we were absolutely in love!

She likes to see who the Pet of the Week is each week, and finally, we thought we’d submit her as we feel she is well deserving of the title!

Patches is a purebred Frenchie who is super affectionate and fun, and loves meeting new people and pups. She enjoys Law and Order marathons, sunbathing wherever she can, lots of snuggles, brief walks around the neighborhood, and giving humans the stare-down when you’re in possession of bacon – or any food for that matter. She is such a fun loving dog who can brighten anyone’s day. If you’re feeling under the weather, she’s also a very qualified caretaker who will snuggle with you all day long.

Patches is very much looking forward to the warmer weather, when she can frolic around the neighborhood, do some patio entertaining, and provide oversight while grilling out.

Arlington Pet of the Week: Finley

Becky's Pet Care

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Finley, a 5-month-old mixed breed puppy rescued from Mississippi who likes snuggling and digging.

Here is what his owner, Holly, had to say:

This if Finley the Rescue Puppy. He is a rescue from Mississippi, brought to Northern Virginia after the hurricane season by Wolf Trap Animal Rescue out of Vienna, VA. We adopted him on October 21, 2017. He is a mixed breed puppy (currently 5 months) with an ancestry of Boston Terrier, Boxer and other Terrier breeds. Finley was adopted two years after we lost our last dog friend, Riggs, who was 14 when he passed away. It took our family a long time to be emotionally ready for another dog, but once we saw Finley, we knew it was time and that he would be the perfect fit.

In the months that we’ve had him, he as been a joy to our family. He is a snuggler and very trainable. Because of his mixed breed ancestry, he can do a little bit of everything. He, of course, has some of the negative traits of his breeds, such as digging, boxing, and resource aggression, but he has the potential to be an agility star and to guard our family well.

He doesn’t shed, sleeps through the night, and is a great listener. We are looking forward to the warm weather of the Spring and the completion of his vaccinations, so that we can take him to dog parks. Luckily, we have many friends and neighbors who have also gotten puppies, so he has lots of opportunities for socialization. We feel blessed to have found a rescue that fits so perfectly in our family. Many thanks to Wolf Trap Animal Rescue!
