One of the largest marathon races in the country is returning to Arlington this weekend with planned road closures and festivities.

On Sunday, the 49th Marine Corps Marathon — dubbed “The People’s Marathon” — will kick off at 7:55 a.m. at Route 110, between the Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetery.

Falls Church City Manager Wyatt Shields and his staff currently are attempting to juggle requests from various organizations to close streets for Halloween-themed events.

At least six have come in, double the typical number of street closings allowed on any given day, city officials say.


Around Town

Several roads will close temporarily for the 40th annual Army Ten-Miler race this Sunday, Oct. 13.

Some streets in and around Rosslyn, Crystal City and the Pentagon will be affected. Closures will begin at 5 a.m. and last until 12:30 p.m.

The filming of an Arlington County Police Department recruitment video will bring a temporary road closure on Friday.

A section of Army Navy Drive between S. Nash Street and 28th Street S. will be closed from 5-10 p.m. to accommodate filming, ACPD said. The forthcoming video is meant to “showcase the work of our officers and enhance our recruitment efforts.”

Drivers on the George Washington Memorial Parkway may soon have clearer views of the Potomac, but they should also expect weekend lane closures during restoration work.

The National Park Service announced yesterday (Monday) that crews will “rehabilitate” 15 scenic vistas between the North Donaldson Overlook and Spout Run Parkway.

Due to inclement weather, the scheduled closure of the northbound lanes of the George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) between Spout Run Parkway and Windy Run Bridge has been cancelled for this weekend. Events

Green Valley’s annual summer celebration is scheduled to return this weekend.

Food vendors, a moon bounce and live music will be coming to the area around Charles R. Drew Elementary School this Saturday at the annual Green Valley Day.


Events

Late September marks the halfway point to St. Patrick’s Day, and in Shirlington, it also means the return of the neighborhood’s annual Celtic Festival.

The free festivities take place from noon to 7 p.m. this Saturday, Sept. 21, in and around Samuel Beckett’s Irish Gastro Pub at 2800 S. Randolph Street.


Traffic

Columbia Pike is blocked due to a snapped utility pole and downed wires.

The incident happened along the ongoing construction zone near S. George Mason Drive, which has also seen previous emergency closures due to crews puncturing gas lines. Video posted today on social media by local public safety watcher Dave Statter shows a truck striking low-hanging wires and breaking the pole in half.

A fire in a small strip mall has blocked Glebe Road during the morning rush hour.

Firefighters were dispatched to a restaurant at 71 N. Glebe Road around 6:30 a.m. for a report of a business on fire. They found smoke coming from below the roof, fire in the basement and a hole in the floor, according to scanner traffic.

A stretch of the northbound George Washington Memorial Parkway will be closed over the next two weekends.

The closures, affecting the stretch between Spout Run Parkway and Route 123, will begin at 8 p.m. on Friday, July 26, and end at 5 a.m. on Monday, July 29, before the morning rush hour, per a National Park Service press release.

For the second time this month, the Shirlington Circle south rotary bridge over I-395 has closed for construction.

The bridge — which connects southbound lanes from I-395 and Shirlington Road to North Quaker Lane at Exit 6 — is set to remain closed until just before midnight this coming Sunday, July 28.
