The Rosslyn Business Improvement District canceled its Tuesday lunchtime concert today due to oppressive 100 degree heat and high humidity.
Tomorrow’s Wednesday lunchtime concert and the after-work Party at the Plaza have also been canceled.

And not only does the Big Belly compactor save fuel, it also saves money at a time when the county is cutting back on the frequency of trash collection along the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor due to budget constraints. Plus, the devices can potentially save money on pest control by keeping rodents out of the trash.
The bus has 36 seats as opposed to the normal 56. That allows for reclining leather seats that are 25 percent wider and provide a claimed 50 percent more leg room. Vamoose says the seats are larger than first-class seats on airliners.
The “technology-friendly” bus features power outlets at every seat and complimentary internet access.
At Piola in Rosslyn, a sizable crowd jumped to their feet when Landon Donovan knocked in the game’s only point following a rebound off Algeria’s goalkeeper. Fans watching the game at Summers Restaurant in Courthouse, who had been bracing for a tie that would have sent the U.S. back home, celebrated wildly.
Along Wilson Boulevard, two cars passed by with horns honking and with passengers holding American flags out windows.
The movie, a silent Keystone Kops film called A Thief Catcher, will be a centerpiece of the 2010 Slapsticon film festival, being held at the Rosslyn Spectrum Theater from July 15-18. The film will be shown at the festival kickoff on Thursday, July 15, at 7:00 p.m.
Chaplin has a two minute cameo as an incompetent cop in the 10-minute flick. He is seen sporting his soon-to-be-trademark mustache for one of the first times.

Two weekly events start today in Rosslyn — part of a very musical summer in the otherwise business-oriented neighborhood.
From 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., local R&B and jazz act Spur of the Moment will kick off the CentralPlace Wednesday lunchtime concert series. The concerts are being held at “CentralSpace,” the temporary park at the corner of North Moore Street and Wilson Boulevard (CentralSpace will eventually be the site of a new office tower).
You’ll have to wait another seven days to get your outdoor ’90s movie fix. Tonight’s outdoor showing of “Happy Gilmore” in Rosslyn has been canceled due to an approaching line of storms.

Last Chain Bridge Closure — Starting around 9:00 tonight Chain Bridge will once again close completely to traffic and pedestrians. Crews will be working to repave the bridge deck, the Washington Post reports. The bridge is expected to reopen on Monday morning. This should be the last full closure of the bridge, which has been undergoing a year-long rehabilitation process.
Berry Officially Joins Young Guns List — GOP congressional candidate Matthew Berry has been officially listed as “On the Radar” on the National Republican Congressional Campaign’s “Young Guns” website. The list recognizes congressional contenders who have achieved certain fundraising goals.

“Arlington is one of the most bike-friendly communities in the United States,” Arlington County Board Chairman Jay Fisette said to kick off this morning’s Bike to Work Day event in Rosslyn. And the county’s efforts seem to be paying off: Fisette said that this was the best-attended Bike to Work Day he has ever been a part of.
Hundreds of bicyclists stopped at Bike to Work Day “pit stops” in Rosslyn, Ballston and Crystal City before pedaling to work this morning. There was no denying that there were more bikes on the road than usual, as normally car-bound or transit-hopping commuters took advantage of the nice weather and the communal experience of riding into the city en masse.
At a Bike to Work Day event at Gateway Park in Rosslyn, Fisette called the program “a great system to help us promote cycling and promote health in Arlington.”
Initially launching in Crystal City this fall, the Arlington-DC bike share system will feature 1,100 bikes that will be available for rent at docking stations located primarily around transit centers. Bike usage will cost $5 per day or $80 for a year. Fisette said the county hopes to eventually expand the system to the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor.

Arlington will host three gathering points, or “pit stops,” for Bike to Work Day, which is an opportunity for regular bike commuters and curious car devotees to get together and ride into D.C. en masse. The pit stops include Rosslyn Gateway Park (1300 Lee Highway), the Crystal City Water Park (1750 Crystal Drive) and Conte’s Bike Shop in Ballston (3924 Wilson Boulevard).

The woman had just walked into her apartment complex’s pool house to use the bathroom. That’s when police say a man confronted her, forced her to the ground and allegedly tried to put his hand down her pants.
She fought back, struggled with the suspect, and eventually he ran off.
