Crime Report: Day Laborer Robbed

In this week’s Arlington County crime report, we learn more about the suspect arrested after a series of foot chases Sunday night.

ABDUCTION-ARREST, 05/02/11, 4900 block of N. 19th Street. On May 1 at 11:15 pm, a 17 year-old female was attacked by a former acquaintance. The suspect grabbed the victim and pulled her to a wooded area where he attempted to sexually assault her. The victim managed to escape and call police. After an extensive search and several foot pursuits, police apprehended the suspect. Milton Masariego-Deleon, 22, of Arlington, was charged with Abduction with the Intent to Defile. He was held without bond.

Crime Report: Unwanted Intrusions Edition

This week’s Arlington County crime report contains several items of note. On Thursday, a bullet was fired into a Pentagon City apartment. Nobody was injured and nobody knows who fired the bullet.

MISSILE INTO AN OCCUPIED DWELLING 04/18/11, 1300 block of S. Arlington Ridge Road. On April 14 at midnight, an unknown subject fired a bullet into an occupied apartment. No one was injured. There are no known suspects.

Publicity May Have Prompted Rape Suspect to Turn Himself In

Arlington police and other law enforcement agencies had been looking for a rape suspect Ronald P. Berton but it wasn’t until his mug shot was splashed across TV screens and computer monitors that the 36-year-old decided to turn himself in.

It’s not known for sure whether media attention helped convince Berton to surrender to police Sunday night — two days after police handed his photo over to local news organizations — but it certainly didn’t hurt.

Police Arrest Suspect in Hotel Sexual Assualt Case

Investigators say 49-year-old Storme Swann, a registered sex offender from LaPlata, Md., knocked on the victims’ hotel room door then forced his way inside. He sexually assaulted the daughter, who is in her 50s, and then fled after stealing money and electronics, according to police.

In a press release, police say they tracked down the suspect thanks to an anonymous tip.

Blue Top Cab Sued for Woman’s Sexual Assault

According to the lawsuit, first reported by Courthouse News Service, the woman was taking a Blue Top taxi from Arlington to Alexandria early on the morning of Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008. When the cab arrived at her house in Alexandria, the woman says she tried to pay with a credit card.

The cabbie ran the card twice and each time said the card was rejected, when in fact the payment went through, according to the lawsuit. When the woman only had $18 in cash for the $19.95 fare, the driver is alleged to have insisted upon driving her to an ATM.

Police Release Surveillance Images From August Sex Assault

Police say the man forced his way into a hotel room and restrained two women: a mother and daughter who were visiting from Canada. He sexually assaulted the daughter, who was in her 50s, and then stole electronics and cash as he left.

“The suspect is described as an African American male approximately 40 years old, 5’8″ and 180 lbs,” police said in a statement. “He appeared unshaven and was wearing a grey t-shirt with a design on it, tan cargo shorts, white shoes and a black baseball cap.”

Arlington Jury Hears Rape Victim’s Story — A 23-year-old University of Maryland graduate student took the witness stand yesterday in the trial of former Henderson Hall Marine Jorge “George” Torrez. The woman described the night in February when she was abducted while walking home with a friend in the Ballston area, then repeatedly raped and left for dead in a remote, wooded area. Solar Raisers Install First System — Volunteers organized by Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment helped install a solar water heating system at a home in south Arlington’s Claremont neighborhood over the weekend. Possible Attempted Sex Assault in Williamsburg

We’re hearing that police are investigating an attempted sex assault that occurred just before 1:00 last night in the Williamsburg neighborhood of north Arlington.

According to initial reports, a man in his late teens or early 20s dropped his pants and then grabbed the victim, a 17-year-old girl.

A late-night knock on the door led to a robbery and sexual assault in a south Arlington hotel room, according to information released by police today.

On Saturday night, investigators say a man knocked on the door of a hotel room at the Best Western (2480 South Glebe Road). When one of the two women who were inside the room at the time opened the door, the man forced his way in. He sexually assaulted one of the women then made off with electronics and money, according to a police statement.

Charges Dropped Against Original Illinois Murder Suspect

Charges were dropped today against the man who was originally accused of the crime. Jerry Hobbs, who confessed to the gruesome murders but later said the confession was coerced, has been released from prison, according to Chicago Breaking News.

Lake County, Ill. prosecutors are expected to hold a press conference later this morning to discuss “new information” in the case. That information is likely revolve around Jorge Torrez, a former Marine currently being held in Arlington on charges of abduction and rape.

Illinois Prosecutor to Address Arlington-Linked Murder Case — Arlington rape suspect Jorge Torrez may learn today whether he will face additional scrutiny in the case of a five-year-old double murder in his former hometown. The Lake County, Ill. State’s Attorney is scheduled to hold a press conference this morning with “new information” about the case. Another man, Jerry Hobbs, has been held awaiting trial for the murders since 2005. But DNA evidence in the case was reportedly linked to Torrez last month.

Man Falls at Construction Site — A worker suffered serious injuries after falling at the Adams Square construction site on Columbia Pike around 3:30 yesterday afternoon. He was taken a local hospital and is expected to recover.
