There was at least one individual champion from three of the Arlington high-school teams at district and conference wrestling tournaments.

The Yorktown Patriots had the most winners, with two. The Wakefield Warriors and Washington-Liberty Generals had one each, with the highest finish from a Bishop O’Connell Knights grappler being second.

With a 3-0 record, the Washington-Liberty Generals won this season’s Arlington County wrestling meet between the jurisdiction’s four high-school teams.

The Generals defeated the Bishop O’Connell Knights, Yorktown Patriots and  host Wakefield Warriors.

Wrestlers from three Arlington County high schools recently earned berths at the Zone 4 qualifying event to participate in the Virginia High School League girls state tournament.

The top five wrestlers in each weight class earned those berths at Hayfield Secondary School, with the fifth-place finishers designated as alternates.

The Wakefield High School girls wrestling team showcased its talent at the recent Orange County Open tournament.

The competition was hosted by Orange County High School in Orange, Va., and included more than 300 wrestlers. Wakefield entered six wrestlers and finished 15th in the team scoring. There were 54 teams entered.

Led by standout wrestler Cameron Millsapps, the Wakefield Warriors enjoyed a strong performance at the La Luchadora Classic girls high-school competition.

Millsapps won the individual championship at 152 pounds at the 28-team event. She dominated the weight class with a 4-0 record and four pins.

The Yorktown Patriots were busy in recent tournament and dual-match wrestling action — with mixed results.

In a dual high-school meet, Yorktown recorded three pins and two technical falls in a 44-34 loss to the Marshall Statesmen in Liberty District action.

Of the nine Marymount University Division III winter sports teams, the men’s basketball squad is enjoying the best season so far, with a 7-5 overall record.

The Saints are 1-0 in the Atlantic East Conference, with the squad winning its opening league game by a 67-63 score over the Immaculata University Mighty Macs.

January opens the most important portion of the winter sports seasons for local high-school teams.

Once schools restart play following recent snowy weather conditions, the majority of the remaining regular-season contests will be against district opponents, followed by postseason tournaments.

By combining team scores from the girls varsity and boys junior-varsity wrestling squads, the host Wakefield Warriors won the recent third annual Vic Blue Memorial Tournament.

The high-school teams amassed a 158-point total, with Colonial Forge of Stafford finishing second with 146.5. Arlington’s Washington-Liberty Generals were third with 123.

With multiple wrestlers finishing undefeated, the Yorktown Patriots won the team title at the Wakefield High School Capital Duals competition Dec. 15.

Yorktown finished with a 5-0 record with victories over West Springfield, Potomac Falls, West Albemarle, Riverside and Westfield. The 3-2 victory over Westfield secured the title in the eight-team event.

History was made in Arlington on Saturday (Dec. 14) when a varsity high-school girls dual wrestling match between two teams was held for the first time in the county.

As part of the multi-team Capital Duals Meet hosted at Wakefield High School, the host Warriors and Washington-Liberty Generals wrestled to a 12-12 tie in a scaled-down girls match.

Yorktown Patriots’ wrestler Basheer Hadi was the top finisher from an Arlington school with a runner-up in the heavyweight division at the annual NOVA Classic at Fairfax High School.

Hadi finished with a 3-1 record at the two-day event, concluding Dec. 7, with a first-round bye. His victories were two by pin and the other by technical fall in the semifinals.
