Enjoy a brunch on Saturday, May 31, on the rooftop of 1111 Belle Pre Apartments, a former bottle factory that is now a luxury rental apartment in the heart of Old Town. The meal will be prepared by award-winning chefs Christophe and Michelle Poteaux of the wine bar and bistro Bastille. The chefs specialize in contemporary French fare using seasonal, locally sourced, and farm-fresh ingredients. Chef Christophe will also be on hand for an exclusive meet-and-greet during the brunch.

If the food doesn’t sound tempting enough, consider the setting. The Belle Pre rooftop lounge is a sprawling outdoor space with lounge chairs, a fire pit and a pool deck. You’ll eat French fare and sip cocktails poolside. Specialty cocktails include a Blood Orange Champagne Cocktail and a White Wine and Rosemary Infused Sangria. Music will be provided by DJ Damon, and there will be gifts for the first 100 brunchers.

Schools

Arlington Public Schools will receive a transfer from the county of $432.2 million, with the rest of the money coming from federal, state and other sources.

Responding to parent criticism, the School Board reversed many of the cuts proposed by Superintendent Patrick Murphy. While the school system is growing thanks to increased school enrollment, Murphy sought to offset some of the expense of that growth through cuts totaling $7.3 million and the equivalent of about 75 full-time positions.

Q. We own a 1,000 sq. ft., 2 bedroom, 1 bath townhouse in 22204. We’re planning to remodel the small bathroom later this year and as part of the remodel we’ll need to remove or replace the bathtub because of rust and a poorly done refinish (by the previous owner). We are not bathers — at all — and I would like to have a nice walk-in shower rather than a bathtub. Please correct me if I’m mistaken but I suspect that the tub/shower debate is purely subjective and either choice will attract and/or deter certain buyers. My primary concern is how will removing the tub impact property value?

Isabella, who is preparing for the planned fall opening of his Kapnos Taverna restaurant at 4000 Wilson Blvd in Ballston, announced today that he will be opening “Pepita,” a 1,200 square foot Mexican restaurant, in the same building. Pepita is expected to open in “early 2015.”

“I love Mexican food and cocktails, and Pepita is going to be the type of casual neighborhood restaurant and bar I would visit often,” Isabella said in a press release.

Around Town

Residents and out-of-town visitors alike took part in Memorial Day observances around Arlington this past weekend.

Warm and sunny weather helped drive large crowds for stalwart annual events like the Rolling Thunder motorcycle rally and the wreath-laying at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery.

According to his campaign, Hope was canvassing Sunday morning in the Woodlawn neighborhood of Fairfax County when he fell. He was taken to Virginia Hospital Center and diagnosed with one broken rib, multiple fractured ribs and some “ugly bruising,” his campaign said in a press release.

“I am resting comfortably at home in Arlington now,” Hope said in the release. “I’ve knocked on 13,000 doors in the last five years, and dealt with a few misjudged stairs, a dog bite and a couple of ankle sprains and never missed a beat. A rib break will cause me to miss some time on the campaign trail however.”
