Garbage collection will take place, and those whose garbage day is Thursday are also asked to put their carts out for collection.

Snow Returns, Slowing Plow Progress

The second act of today’s snowstorm has arrived, with a couple more inches of snow expected to accumulate.

The snow returned just as Arlington road crews were starting to tackle still snow-covered neighborhood streets. It could force the snow plows to continue focusing on primary and secondary arteries while the residential roads remain barely, if at all passable.

Bar Fight in Ballston Sends One to Hospital

The incident happened around 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12. Arlington County police say a fight between two men led to one man stabbing and/or slashing the other with a broken beer bottle.

“The victim sustained lacerations to the face and neck,” according to the police report. “He was transported to GW Hospital.”

Work to Begin Soon on Bergmann’s Development — Developer McCaffery Interests is planning to begin demolition work soon on the former Bergmann’s dry cleaning plant, at the corner of Lee Highway and N. Vietch Street. Workers could be seen surveying the building last week. On the site, McCaffrey will build a mixed-use development now called “Verde Pointe.” The project, which was approved in 2012, includes 177 apartments, 23 townhomes and a 14,000 square foot MOM’s Organic Market grocery store. Opower Files for IPO — Courthouse-based energy efficiency company Opower has filed for an initial public stock offering. The company has nearly 500 employees across 5 offices worldwide. Snow Covers Roads, Cancels Services

Update at 9:25 a.m. — One lane of the GW Parkway is now open in each direction, according to U.S. Park Police. All sites and parking areas along the parkway are closed.

Arlington residents are waking up to almost 9 inches of snow on the ground this morning.

Schools, Federal Offices Closed Due to Snowstorm

All school extracurricular activities, adult education classes and Dept. of Parks and Recreation classes are canceled.

Most ART bus service in the morning has been canceled, although Arlington Transit will try to keep ART 51 service running between Ballston Metro station and Virginia Hospital Center. “ART will restore other service tomorrow as street conditions permit,” the agency said.

Drivers: New Pike Traffic Pattern is Causing Big Backups

Morning rush hour traffic on Columbia Pike has gone from bad to worse thanks to a new traffic pattern at the Washington Boulevard interchange, drivers tell us.

Two weeks ago VDOT, as part of its Route 27/244 interchange project, altered the traffic pattern for vehicles heading eastbound on Columbia Pike. Drivers heading toward northbound I-395 now have to turn left at the traffic signal on S. Quinn Street, whereas before northbound and southbound traffic could both take the right-hand ramp that also leads to southbound I-395.
