UPDATE (3): Woman Dies After Being Hit By Cyclist

The incident happened around 7:15 this morning (Monday) on the trail near the intersection of Columbia Pike and Four Mile Run Drive. According to police, an adult male cyclist was coming down a hill when he called out “on your left, on your left,” to the victim, who was walking on trail.

The victim turned around, moving into the path of the cyclist, and said “what? — at which time she and the cyclist collided, according to Arlington County Police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck. The woman fell backwards and her head hit the pavement, causing significant trauma.

Cyclist Struck, Injured on GW Parkway

The accident happened in the northbound lanes of the GW Parkway just south of Memorial Circle, in an area that has seen tragic accidents and close calls between vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.

According to U.S. Park Police spokesman Sgt. Paul Brooks, the cyclist was conscious and breathing after being struck by the vehicle, and was transported to a local hospital via ambulance. No charges have been filed against the driver, Brooks said.

One Injured After Truck Loses Wheels on Glebe Road

Initial reports suggest the truck was heading southbound on Glebe near the intersection with S. Walter Reed Drive when a pair of its rear wheels flew off and struck a Mercedes SUV traveling northbound.

The driver of the Mercedes was taken to the hospital for evaluation of minor injuries, according to Arlington County police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck. The driver of the tractor trailer stayed on scene after the accident. The wheels ended up at the base of a clump of trees along the southbound side of Glebe.

Person Burned Inside Courthouse Wendy’s

The Arlington County Fire Department responded to the Wendy’s in Courthouse (2038 Wilson Boulevard) this afternoon for a potentially serious burn injury.

Initial reports suggest a technician who was working on one of the restaurant’s fryers somehow had scalding hot oil spilled on his or her abdominal and groin area. Medics on the scene told the dispatcher that the burn injury was “significant.”

(Updated at 10:00 a.m.) Glebe Road was shut down in the area of 5th Street S. this morning due to a head-on collision between a car and a pickup truck

The accident happened just before 9:00 a.m., in front of Arlington Fire Station No. 1. Firefighters had to remove the top of the pickup truck to extricate the female driver, who was reported to be seriously injured. She was brought via ambulance to a local hospital. The driver of the car was reported to be alert and walking around after the accident.

Crash on Memorial Circle Following Car Chase

The car chase started in Tysons Corner, when Fairfax County began pursuing a vehicle after a reported grand larceny, according to Arlington County Police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck. The chase took pursuing officers onto the George Washington Parkway, into the District and into Arlington National Cemetery, before ending in the wreck on Memorial Circle, according to television news reports.

A large contingent of Arlington fire trucks and medic units were dispatched to the scene of the crash, to treat six people injured in the SUV. A photo posted to Twitter depicts the SUV with severe front-end damage on a grassy area just off the circle.

Accident Begets Accident at Pike and Glebe

That was the case today while police were on the scene of a moped accident at the busy intersection of Columbia Pike and Glebe Road. A man on a moped lost control while trying to stop at a red light, causing him to hit the pavement and injure his jaw.

Police had just finished interviewing the man when the “crunch” of broken glass could be heard from the southbound lanes of Glebe Road. A driver, apparently distracted by the accident response, had gotten into a fender-bender with another vehicle.

Two people were taken to the hospital following a rear-end collision on N. Lorcom Lane this morning.

The accident happened on Lorcom Lane near the intersection with N. Fillmore Street, two blocks from the Spout Run Parkway. An “Access-Ride” medical transport van somehow rear-ended an Audi sedan, causing significant damage to the back of the Audi but little damage to the van.

Multi-Vehicle Accident on Wilson Boulevard

One of the vehicles involved — witnesses say it was a D.C. taxi cab — lost control while driving toward Clarendon on Wilson Boulevard. The vehicle slammed into a car just outside Arlington Autocare, causing one of the store’s windows to break. It continued through the intersection, took out a traffic light control box, smashed several cars in an auto dealership lot, and slammed into the side of the Doctor’s Building before coming to rest.

At least one person was transported to a local hospital. Initial reports suggest the accident may have happened when the cab driver suffered some sort of medical emergency.

A man suffered a serious arm injury this afternoon after reportedly being cut by a chainsaw.

Initial reports suggest the man was in a bucket truck doing tree maintenance at an apartment complex on the 2000 block of Columbia Pike when the chainsaw accidentally cut him in the bicep. Paramedics were called, a tourniquet was applied, and the man was rushed to the hospital.
