Recent transplants may be surprised to know that there is no “official” trick or treating time in Arlington. Neither the county nor the police department has set an official time or day, spokespeople tell us.
The driver of a gray Jaguar, apparently fleeing after a collision in Courthouse, rear-ended a police cruiser two blocks away.
The police cruiser suffered minor damage as a result of the crash yesterday afternoon, on 14th Street near North Barton Street. The Jaguar had significant damage to its rear end — likely caused by the first accident.
Columbia Pike is being shut down near the Navy Annex as Pentagon police investigate a suspicious package at a bus stop. The bus stop is located next to a Department of Defense-run parking lot.
Arlington police will be shutting down Columbia Pike from South Joyce Street to South Orme Street. The ramps from Washington Boulevard may also be shut down.
Police are investigating a death on 2nd Street South in Alcova Heights this morning.
A passerby found a person shot to death in a car, police said. The car was parked on the side of the street, still running. Initial evidence points to suicide, we’re told.
The following item from this week’s Arlington County crime report might make you think twice before honking the horn, even if the other guy is clearly in the wrong. This happened less than a block from the Ballston Metro station.
BRANDISHING 10/16/10, 4200 block of Fairfax Drive. On October 16 at 6:30 pm, a man honked his vehicle horn at three males crossing against a traffic light. One of the subjects lifted his shirt and displayed a handgun. The suspect is described as an African American man in his 20’s wearing a red jacket and a skullcap.
It would be a crime to miss out on the sweet treats on sale today outside the Arlington County courthouse (1425 N. Courthouse Road).
The police department is holding a bake sale to raise money for its second annual Be Brave and Shave fundraiser. Money from the fundraiser will benefit cancer research at Children’s National Medical Center.
We’re hearing that vandals slashed the tires on 15-20 cars in the Langston-Brown neighborhood overnight.
Among the streets hit were North Edison Street and North Culpeper Street, near Virginia Hospital Center and Glebe Elementary School.
A motorcyclist died after a violent collision with a car on Route 50 Friday night.
The accident occurred just after 9:00 p.m. at the intersection of Route 50 and Irving Street. The car, a Nissan, collided with the motorcycle in the intersection, police said. The motorcyclist was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the car remained on scene.

MALICIOUS WOUNDING 10/12/10, 2900 block of S. Glebe Road. On October 12 at 3:30 am, a known suspect hit the male victim in the face with a metal candlestick.
Secure Communities checks the immigration status of those booked into local jails by comparing fingerprints sent to the FBI’s criminal database to an ICE immigration database. Because the fingerprints are first sent to the state, which then sends them to the FBI, local communities can’t opt out, Morton said.
He also dispelled the notion that Secure Communities forces local police departments to enforce immigration laws.
“We need to ask him to clarify this conflicting information we’ve been getting,” county board member Walter Tejada said in a telephone interview last night. He was referring to a recent Washington Post article that suggested communities will not be able to opt-out of the immigration enforcement initiative, as the county board had been led to believe.
“Once we have that clarification, and we better understand what else we need to be asking, we’re going to go from there,” Tejada said.
(Updated at 2:15 p.m.) A pedestrian was struck by a car at the intersection of North Glebe Road and Fairfax Drive just after 1:00 this afternoon.
Bystanders who witnessed the aftermath of the accident say the victim was an older man. He was bleeding from the face when police arrived on scene, but was conscious and was able to sit up before being loaded onto an ambulance, they said.
