Just over 1,200 Dominion customers were without power in Arlington this morning on an exceptionally sweltering day.
The outage affected a far northern section of Arlington — along parts of N. Glebe Road, Military Road and Chesterbrook Road — plus a portion of McLean. It followed reports of an arcing power line on the 3600 block of Miliary Road, which prompted a fire department response.
For at least the fourth time since late June, Dominion customers in Ballston and Virginia Square area are without power.
The outage started around 2 a.m. this morning, residents tell ARLnow, and an outage map shows it affecting roughly the same area as previous outages on June 24, July 15 and July 23.
A large fire department response responded to an underground utility fire in Crystal City this afternoon.
The fire, on the 2400 block of Crystal Drive amid office and apartment buildings, followed reports of an “explosion” heard and felt in the area shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday.
More than 2,500 homes and businesses were without power Monday afternoon in parts of Pentagon City and Crystal City.
Reports of the outage started coming in around 3:20 p.m. Firefighters have since been dispatched to numerous buildings in the area for reports of stuck elevators.
Nearly 3,000 residences and businesses were without power in the Ballston and Virginia Square area Monday evening.
That was according to Dominion’s outage map at 6:45 p.m.
Some 3,000 homes and businesses were reported to be without power this afternoon in northern Arlington and a small portion of McLean.
The outage follows reports of the sounds of possible transformer explosions in the area of Nelly Custis Drive and N. Lincoln Street in Cherrydale.
Update at 1:35 p.m. — The vast majority of affected customers have had their power restored, according to Dominion’s outage map.
Earlier: Nearly 1,400 homes and businesses are without power in and around Virginia Square.
About 1,000 Dominion customers in the Rosslyn area are in the dark tonight (Friday).
An outage, first reported around 6:30 p.m., has knocked out power to a number of large buildings and other parts of the neighborhood.
Update at 10:25 a.m. — Several hundred residents, mostly in the Tara-Leeway Heights and Westover neighborhoods, are still without power Monday morning. Dominion reports that power is still out for 530 customers, despite repair work overnight. The estimated restoration time is between 2-5 p.m.
Earlier: On a cold, damp night — and in the midst of the NFC Championship game — more than 3,000 Arlington homes and businesses are in the dark.
(Updated at 10:35 a.m.) More than 3,000 Arlington homes and businesses were in the dark this morning due to a large outage.
The outage appeared to be centered around the East Falls Church Metro station, affecting several northwestern Arlington neighborhoods including Westover.
(Updated at 12:30 p.m.) More than 5,000 Dominion customers were in the dark this morning due to a large power outage.
Around 10:45 a.m. firefighters were dispatched to the power substation at the intersection of S. Fern Street and 18th Street S. for a report of a transformer explosion and fire.
(Updated at 9:15 p.m.) Thousands were without power in and around Crystal City and Pentagon City for much of the day due to a widespread outage.
The outage was first reported just after 11:15 a.m. Arlington County firefighters investigated a possible underground explosion and treated a Dominion worker with burns from steam that came out of a manhole, according to scanner traffic.
