Republic Kitchen & Bar (801 N. Quincy Street) has been shuttered for the past several days and may be closed for good.

The Ballston eatery has a sign in the window that reads “We close [sic] to make some changes today, sorry for your inconvenience.” Its phone number, meanwhile, has been disconnected, as has its website. The restaurant’s Facebook page was last updated Jan. 16.

Local coffee roaster Commonwealth Joe appears ready to open a new coffee shop in Pentagon City.

Commonwealth Joe already has a coffee shop presence in Arlington — it acquired Java Shack near Courthouse just over a year ago. The new Pentagon City store would represent a significant expansion for the company, which has previously focused mostly on wholesale and office coffee distribution.

As of noon today, there was no one skating at the Pentagon City Row ice skating rink, as the sun shone and temperatures reached into the 70s.

With above-average temperatures in the forecast for the foreseeable future, the skating rink may soon look as much like a swimming pool as a winter wonderland.

Organized by the Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington, the RAMMYs recognize excellence among D.C. area restaurants. Typically the awards are pretty District-centric. In 2011, for instance, only two Arlington restaurants were nominated.

This year, Arlington restaurants garnered a half dozen or so nominations. Among them:

To start, the local watering hole at 2854 Wilson Blvd will hold a release party for a new signature beer tonight.

Created as a collaboration with Devil’s Backbone Brewing near Lexington, Va., the beer is being called the “Whitlow’s Good Time IPA.” It’s a moderately hoppy beer that’s 4.7 percent alcohol by volume, according to Whitlow’s manager Jon Williams.

This year’s selection includes favorites like Thin Mints, Samoas, Tagalongs, Trefoils, Do-si-dos and Savannah Smiles, along with some newer cookies recently added to the lineup.

Booth sales will be going on locally through at least March 20. You can search for sale locations on the Girl Scout website, or use this handy guide to find a sale location this weekend.

John Johns purchased a few scratch-off Virginia Lottery tickets while grabbing a cup of coffee at a 7-Eleven in Alexandria. As he scratched them off, he couldn’t believe his eyes when one of them was a $2.5 million winner for the top prize in the Cash Winfall game.

Johns took the cash option over the annuity and will get a check for $1.35 million before taxes. He’s considering buying a new vacation home with his winnings.

Situated at 5723 Lee Highway, the restaurant first opened in 2010. Since then, District Taco has expanded with a slew of new locations in D.C. and Northern Virginia.

Osiris Hoil, who founded District Taco as a single taco cart and now serves as the chain’s CEO, said the Lee Highway restaurant is getting some needed TLC and will remain closed for a few weeks.

(Updated at 4:45 p.m.) Secret Chopsticks in Rosslyn has closed after only three months in business.

The upscale Chinese restaurant opened in December November, after various issues delayed its opening by a year and a half. The delayed opening wasn’t the restaurant’s only problem — it had an inconspicuous lead-up to its opening, garnered mediocre reviews from diners and its general manager reportedly left in December, shortly after it opened.
