Board Approves $250,000 in Art Grants — The county board voted unanimously last night to provide a quarter million dollars worth of grants to 19 Arlington-based arts organizations and three individual artists. The grants range from $44,600 to $1,240. See a list of recipients here.

Fisette Pens Green Jobs Op-Ed in Richmond Paper — In a column for the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Arlington County Board Chairman Jay Fisette compares Thomas Jefferson’s far-sighted and, at the time, controversial Louisiana Purchase to proposed federal spending on clean energy. Fisette argues that investing in green jobs now will pay off in a big way down the road.

BREAKING TRAFFIC — I-395 Lanes Blocked After Car Flips Over

As of 1:45, the HOV lanes and two lanes northbound and southbound I-395 are blocked between Seminary Road and King Street.

First responders from Arlington and Alexandria are on scene, along with Virginia State Police.

Ten Cars Damaged on North Rhodes Street — A driver who police believe was drunk smashed into as many as ten cars early this morning on North Rhodes Street. Around 12:30 a.m., residents reported hearing the sound of a car crash. When police arrived, they found as many as 10 cars with collision damage between Key Boulevard and Wilson Boulevard. Police located a man suspected of being the driver of the striking vehicle a short time later.

Painter In Critical Condition After Ladder Touches Power Lines

The man, who’s in his mid-20s, was working as a contract employee for College Pro Painters, firefighters said.

According to Arlington County Fire Department spokesperson Jose Ortiz, the man was trying to position the ladder on a house he was working on, when it fell backwards onto 19,900 volt power lines. The man was severely burned and was knocked back nearly nine feet by the electrical shock.

Flames Engulf Minivan In Costco Parking Lot

A minivan caught on fire in the parking lot of the Costco store in Pentagon City today. The vehicle’s engine compartment was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived around 1:45 p.m.

No one was in the minivan when the fire broke out and there were no injuries, we’re told.

A small World War II-era biplane flipped over while landing at Reagan National Airport this morning, closing the main runway. The crash was captured on video by Dan Webb and posted to YouTube by Jon Ostrower of the website FlightBlogger.

Accident on 14th Street Bridge Causes Big Backups

An accident in the center of the northbound span of the 14th Street Bridge is causing big traffic tie-ups for motorists heading into the District.

Emergency vehicles blocked all but the right-most lane on the bridge for 45 minutes this afternoon. Traffic backed up on I-395 past the Pentagon. There were also backups on Route 1 and Route 110 leading up to the ramps to I-395.

Carlin Springs Road Still Blocked After Accident

Carlin Springs Road is still closed between North Glebe Road and Vermont Street after a utility pole collapsed, sparked a fire and knocked out power to nearly 2,000 homes and businesses.

Crews from Dominion, Verizon and Comcast are still working to fix the mess. No word yet on whether the road will reopened by the evening rush hour.

UPDATED — Man Dies After Accidental Plunge

A man was killed this afternoon when he fell nearly four stories off the ledge of an elevated apartment terrace onto a concrete driveway below. Police are still investigating the incident but preliminary reports suggest the fall was accidental, according to Arlington Police spokesperson Det. Crystal Nosal.

It happened just before 4:00 this afternoon at The Prime at Arlington Courthouse apartments (1415 North Taft Street). There were several witnesses who gave statements to police.

Car Crashes Into Rhodeside Grill

A two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Wilson Boulevard and North Rhodes Street resulted in one of the cars crashing into the front of Rhodeside Grill.

The impact shattered one of the restaurant’s plate glass windows and destroyed a planter. Shards of glass and soil from the planter could be seen scattered across part of the restaurant.

Accident Shuts Down George Mason Drive At Rt. 50

South George Mason Drive was been shut down from Route 50 to Columbia Pike today due to an accident involving a construction vehicle.

It happened near the National Guard Readiness Center, where a considerable amount of construction is taking place.
