Some holiday cheer is coming to Rosslyn this evening (Friday) with a tree lighting and dog-friendly happy hour featuring Santa.

The events were originally scheduled to happen on different days, with the tree lighting taking place yesterday evening — but it got pushed back due to strong winds. The twinkling Tannenbaum will now be celebrated in tandem with a “Santa Paws Yappy Hour” at Central Place Plaza, located at 1800 N. Lynn Street.

Following a tree lighting at 6 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday), a Wine & Cider Festival featuring beverages and charcuterie pairings is happening from 2-8 p.m. on Saturday.

An annual Shirlington holiday tradition is fast-approaching with festive music and family-friendly activities.

The Village at Shirlington’s annual tree lighting celebration begins at 6 p.m. this Thursday, Dec. 5. The event includes horse-drawn carriage rides, photos with Santa, face painting, a makers market and live holiday tunes.

Amid chilly weather and decorations going up around Arlington, the holiday season — and, by extension, Christmas tree sales season — has arrived.

Many tree sales around Arlington will start on Friday and Saturday, right after Thanksgiving. In parks, parking lots and garden centers, the festive firs won’t be hard to find — though some markets encourage early shopping.

The Arlington County Police Department is kicking off its annual toy drive for children in need.

The first of two ACPD collection events is taking place this weekend, and drop boxes were placed around the county last week. As part of its 10th annual “Fill the Cruiser” campaign, the department is seeking new, unwrapped toys for kids up to 17 years old.

Most local-government offices in Arlington and Falls Church will be closed on Monday (Nov. 11) in observance of Veterans Day.

Most offices of the state and federal governments will also be closed. Virginia’s court system, including all local courts, will be closed.

In honor of Veterans Day on Monday, a number of Arlington businesses are offering complimentary meals and other free stuff to veterans and active service members.

Free pizza, free donuts, free car washes and other offerings of gratitude are available at the following locations.

Arlington County government offices will be open but those in Falls Church, along with the state and federal governments, will be closed this Monday, Oct. 14.

The federal and state governments observe the day as Columbus Day. The state government also marks it as Yorktown Victory Day.


Events

Thursday is the Fourth of July, and Arlingtonians have a front-row seat to the annual fireworks show over the nation’s capital.

The National Park Service is expected to start its fireworks show over the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool at 9:09 p.m. For those hoping to stay west of the Potomac River, there are plenty of spots in and around Arlington to see the show.

Tomorrow is Juneteenth and that means a number of closures in Arlington.

The federal holiday, on June 19, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. In addition to most federal offices being closed, Arlington County offices, libraries, courts and community centers will be closed Wednesday.
