Today, at 9:32 a.m., the shadows cast by the stone spheres and iron poles in Dark Star Park (1655 N. Ft. Myer Drive) will line up with the permanently-installed artistic images of shadows on the ground.
While a grand all-day festival — like the one held in 2009 to mark the park’s 25th anniversary — is not planned this year, the Rosslyn Business Improvement District expects fans of the urban park to stop by this morning to witness the annual event.
Car Doesn’t Let Accident Slow it Down — A single-vehicle accident occurred last night around 2:00 a.m. near the merge from Rosslyn to Route 110. A Ford Crown Victoria slammed into a concrete barrier, losing its front bumper and license plate in the process. Incredibly, despite the airbags deploying, the driver — and his passengers — decided to keep going. Police eventually caught up with them at the King Street exit of I-395.
Rosslyn Outdoor Movie Canceled — Tonight’s scheduled screening of “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery” in Rosslyn has been canceled due to the extreme heat.
Today’s Rosslyn lunchtime concert, slated to feature New Orleans-inspired rock quartet The Grandsons, has been canceled “due to excessive heat.” Thursday’s lunchtime concert has also been canceled, as has the Thursday lunchtime farmers market.
They don’t exactly look like hardened criminals, but some are questioning the persistence of groups of kids who have been selling animal crackers along the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor.

Monday Hopes to Enliven Rosslyn’s Restaurant Scene — Building owner Monday Properties is hoping to bring in some new restaurants to the Rosslyn area and shake off the “stigma” that there’s no nighttime foot traffic in the office-oriented neighborhood. The company just signed two new restaurants — Roti Mediterranean Grill at 1501 Wilson Blvd and Ahra Cafe & Sandwich Bar at 1100 Wilson Blvd. It’s hoping to find more restaurant tenants for its 1501 Wilson property. Ahra Cafe, meanwhile, is replacing three existing businesses, including a beloved coffee shop. [Washington Business Journal]

The bright yellow van that tows the cart was involved in a fender bender this morning in nearly the same location as the first accident — on Lee Highway at Lynn Street in Rosslyn. Twitter user @heryandotus captured the scene from a nearby building. It appears that a car swerved into the van’s lane, sideswiping it. Luckily, the van and the cart were able to continue on to Crystal City to serve breakfast tacos.
“It’s fixed, Amigo!” District Taco said on its Twitter account.
A 22-year-old man was struck by a car on N. Lynn Street as moviegoers gathered in nearby Gateway Park for Rosslyn’s outdoor film series Friday night. Police issued the following press release about the incident.
The Arlington County Police Department is investigating a pedestrian accident that occurred in the 1100 block of North Lynn Street. At approximately 9 p.m. on Friday, July 1, 2011, a Honda Civic struck a man walking through traffic.
The issue is presented as a set of two mutually-exclusive options: either continue to support transportation policies that make it easy to own and drive a car, at the expense of bike and pedestrian safety; or support policies that make it easier and safer to walk and bike, at the expense of drivers.
Yesterday on the Arlington’s Commuter Page Blog, county Commuter Services Transportation Bureau Chief Chris Hamilton lauded Europe’s pro-pedestrian and anti-car policies, which have “reduced traffic and the number of cars in cities… re-conquering space for pedestrians.”
The cart flipped over this morning on the ramp from Lee Highway to I-66/Roosevelt Bridge in Rosslyn. On Twitter, District Taco blamed a broken tow hitch for the mishap.
“The life of a food trucker is not easy,” @districttaco lamented. “This is one of the problems that we have to face.”
State of the County Address — County Board Chairman Chris Zimmerman delivered the annual State of the County address in Crystal City yesterday. “All indications are that we are well-positioned for the future,” Zimmerman told the crowd. “Demand is both strong and growing for transit-accessible, walkable urban communities.”[Sun Gazette]

A FroZenYo self-serve frozen yogurt shop is under construction in Crystal City.
The store will be replacing a closed Quizno’s Restaurant, next to the Chipotle at 2231 Crystal Drive. No word on when it will be opening, but building permits are now posted in the windows.
Traffic lights are dark and homes and businesses are without electricity in the Rosslyn and Courthouse area this evening.
As of 5:00 p.m., Dominion was reporting more than 1,200 customers without power in Arlington. Rhodeside Grill tells ARLnow.com that they’re among the businesses without power in the area.
