Woman Charged With DUI in Police Car Crash

At 2:20 a.m. on July 20, the officer was responding to a call in Ballston when his police cruiser collided with another vehicle at N. Glebe Road and Washington Boulevard. The officer was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Even now, he’s “still in and out of the hospital,” according to police spokeswoman Det. Crystal Nosal.

Today police announced that Arlington resident Kathryn Grace Kron, 21, has been arrested in connection with the accident. Kron is charged with Driving While Intoxicated, DWI Maiming and Possession of a Schedule II Drug, according to police. She is currently out on bond.

Teen Pleads to Reckless Driving in Fatal Crash

Joseph DiFilippo pleaded guilty in Arlington General District Court on Aug. 25, prosecutors say. He was sentenced to 12 months in jail, but the entirety of the jail term was suspended on the condition of good behavior and the completion of 200 hours of community service. DiFilippo is also required to speak about his actions before monthly driver’s license presentation ceremonies held at the Arlington County courthouse. Additionally, his driver’s license was suspended six months, the maximum allowed by state law.

“Pursuant to a plea agreement, three other traffic infractions were dismissed,” said Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Jennifer Clarke. She noted that DiFilippo had a valid driver’s license at the time of the accident, despite an initial charge of driving without a license.

Virginia State Police Officer Struck by SUV on the Pike

(Updated at 9:35 a.m.) A Virginia State Police motorcycle officer was struck by an SUV this morning on the ramp from eastbound Columbia Pike to Washington Boulevard.

The extent of the officer’s injuries are unknown at this time, but initial reports suggested he was conscious and alert after the accident. The officer was quickly loaded onto an ambulance and taken to the hospital.

SUV Runs Off Glebe Road, Down Hill, Into Yard

An SUV that careened out of control at Glebe Road and N. Woodstock Street, in Waverly Hills, ran through a yard, across a driveway and down a wooded embankment before coming to a rest in a yard at the corner of Woodstock Street and 19th Road.

At least one parked car was hit as the SUV ran off the road. The SUV, which was carted away by a flatbed tow truck before the above photo was taken, suffered heavy front end damage.

Car Rams into Westover Storefront

A car rammed into the Grand Hunan Chinese Carry-Out restaurant in the Westover Shopping Center last night.

The accident happened around 7:45 p.m. The car hopped a curb and slammed into a low brick wall, coming to rest across the sidewalk. Amazingly, no one was hurt.

Vehicle Overturns After Accident in Ashton Heights

A car flipped on its roof in residential Ashton Heights last night, but luckily no one was seriously hurt.

The accident happened on the 500 block of N. Nelson Street just before 8:00 p.m. The car flipped over after hitting another vehicle, though the collision itself did not significantly damage either car, according to a witness. The driver of the overturned vehicle was able to get herself out of the car and was not seriously hurt.

TRAFFIC ALERT — Major Delays on I-395

Nearly the entire length of northbound I-395 is slow this morning, thanks in part to an accident near the 14th Street Bridge.

Crews are still in the process of cleaning up a multi-vehicle accident in the center lanes of 395, just before the Boundary Channel Drive. Police are on the scene.

Three-Vehicle Accident on Southbound I-395

As seems to happen quite often during heavy rains, an accident has occurred on southbound I-395 just past Washington Boulevard.

Three vehicles were involved in the accident. One vehicle ran into the guardrail on the right side of the roadway, while the other two smashed into the barrier on the left side, blocking the lefthand lane.

Cyclist Issued Warning by ACPD After Accident

The accident happened on the afternoon of Wednesday, Aug. 10. The cyclist said he was heading eastbound on the Custis Trail, crossing Lynn Street in Rosslyn with the green light, when a car quickly turned in front of him as he was traveling across the intersection. He slammed on the brakes but still hit the vehicle’s rear driver’s side quarter panel.

The cyclist, who did not want to be named, said that police followed his ambulance to the hospital, asked him to write a written statement, and then handed him a warning as soon as he had finished the statement. The warning was for failing to “obey a highway sign.”

Arlington ranks 180 out of 193 cities in Allstate’s “Best Driver” rankings. That’s a downgrade compared to last year, when Arlington drivers ranked 174th. According to the latest data, drivers in Arlington go an average of 6.8 years between accidents.

By comparison, drivers in the safest city on the list — Fort Collins, Colo. — go an average of 14 years between accidents.

Police Investigate Reported ART Bus Hit and Run

Police are investigating a possible hit and run involving an Arlington Transit bus.

A driver told police that an ART bus hit his driver’s side door near the intersection of S. Courthouse Road and 2nd Street, then continued on its way. No injuries were reported.

Dump Truck Loses Wheel in Ballston

A fully-loaded dump truck came to a grinding halt at the intersection of N. Glebe Road and Randolph Street this morning after its left front wheel detached from the axle.

Nobody was hurt, but the accident did block Randolph Street for at least a half hour, as a heavy wrecker truck was brought in to move the disabled dump truck. A large gash was visible in the pavement, showing where the truck started grinding into the street after the wheel fell off.
