Arlington County held its annual observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day this morning.
The ceremony took place at 8:00 p.m. in the plaza between police headquarters and the county jail. Arlington police officers and sheriff’s deputies were joined by county officials and law enforcement personnel from surrounding jurisdictions in remembering the six Arlington County police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
(Updated at 2:30 p.m. on 12/23/21) When a verbal argument led to a malicious physical attack in the Nauck neighborhood Tuesday evening, according to police, the victim’s kids stepped in and began attacking the alleged attacker.
The incident took place just past 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, on the 2400 block of S. Lowell Street. Two neighbors who “have a long, combative history,” got into a verbal argument “that escalated” when one of them pulled out a baseball bat, Arlington County Police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said.
Police say a 30-year-old female jogger was running on the 3400 block of S. Utah Street at approximately 6:00 a.m. when a white, four-door sedan — driven by a white male in his 40s with brown hair and a goatee — approached her.
The man allegedly asked the victim for directions before he grabbed her and attempted to pull her into his car. She was able to break free and run home to call police.
(Updated at 1:35 p.m.) Police and paramedics swarmed the Ballston Metro station after a stabbing Sunday night.
According to WMATA, a man in his late 20s was stabbed on the station platform around 8:50 p.m. He suffered life-threatening stab wounds to his bicep and abdomen and as of Monday morning was listed in critical/stable condition, according to Metro spokesman Dan Stessel.
(Updated at 7:30 p.m.) Dozens of cars were vandalized overnight in North Arlington, police and residents say.
More than 70 cars had windows shot out by BB gun-wielding vandals, according to Arlington County Police Department spokesman Dustin Sternbeck. The crime spree was reported in neighborhoods north of I-66 and south of Lee Highway — neighborhoods like Waycroft-Woodlawn, Leeway Overlee and Westover.
[Redacted] Watson, 32, was found guilty this week of beating up his roommate after the roommate drew a penis on his face while he slept. An Arlington County Circuit Court judge sentenced Watson to a $1,250 fine and restitution on the misdemeanor charge, but no additional jail time.
During trial, the jury was told that Watson and his two roommates were out drinking in Clarendon on a Friday night last March. When they returned to their Lyon Village home, Watson fell asleep on the couch with his shoes on, prompting the victim decided to prank him by drawing a penis on his face with a black dry erase marker, according to Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Ben Inman, who prosecuted the case.
Police Launch Juvenile Crime Initiative — With prom around the corner, the Arlington County Police Department’s School Resource Officers are launching a spring initiative to prevent and reduce juvenile crime. Offers will focus on preventing crimes like drug and alcohol-related offenses among middle and high school students. [Arlington County]
Woman Falls into Manhole — A woman says she fell into a manhole near Columbia Pike Thursday afternoon. It reportedly happened while crews were working on manholes in the area. The victim says she was hurt and and is considering legal action. [WJLA]
The incident happened early Saturday morning on the 3000 block of Columbia Pike. Police say the man, who is in his 20s, repeatedly kicked the victim in the head, knocking her unconscious. She sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Police declined to identify the suspect, who is still at large, because it could reveal who the victim is. From ACPD:

Police, firefighters and the Arlington County bomb squad are staging at the corner of N. Courthouse Road and 13th Street in response to a suspicious package.
The crime rate in 2013 increased 3.06 percent, according to a press release issued this afternoon. An uptick in aggravated assaults, robberies and larcenies accounted for the overall crime rate jump.
There were 4,209 Part I offenses — rapes, burglaries, robberies aggravated assaults and larcenies — in 2013, up from 4,084 in 2012. Aggravated assaults increased 33 percent from 2012, police said, due in part to the increased frequency of domestic strangulation reports. The increase coincided with a new Virginia law, passed in 2012, that made strangulation a Part I offense.

An 18-year-old Arlington resident was arrested early Tuesday morning after police say he drunkenly ran his car into two small “boulders” at Henry Clay Park, then assaulted two police officers as he was being taken him into custody.
