News

A man who tried unsuccessfully to shoplift from the Ballston area Harris Teeter later flashed a gun, prompting a large police response.

The alleged incident happened just after 11 p.m. last night (Tuesday) at the grocery store on the 600 block of N. Glebe Road.

It’s going to be a very breezy — and, perhaps, briefly snowy — Thursday.

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory for much of the day tomorrow, saying that gusty winds could fell tree branches and cause some power outages.

Water Infrastructure Repairs — Amid temperatures dipping below and then rising above freezing, crews from the Arlington Dept. of Environmental Services responded to several water main breaks and other infrastructure issues yesterday, including at the intersections of S. Glebe Road and S. Old Glebe Road, Wilson Blvd and N. Edison Street, and elsewhere. [Twitter, Twitter, Twitter, Twitter]

Washington Walk Upcoming — On Dec. 14: “Walk in the footsteps of George Washington on a guided walking tour to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Washington’s purchase of 1168 acres of land in what is now Arlington. Record Bikeshare Ridership in F.C. — “For the City’s long-term transportation and bike infrastructure goals, the good news keeps rollin’ in. According to Capital Bikeshare, ride-shares on their service, starting from the City of Falls Church’s ten stations – created in 2019 – have hit a record high.” [Falls Church Independent]

Snow Possible Thursday — “As a strong Arctic front blasts through the area Thursday morning, computer models are simulating a brief period of snow or rain… the precipitation could briefly be heavy and reduce visibility. Sports

Through six matches, the Washington-Liberty Generals club ice-hockey team has had ups and downs — mostly ups.

To date, the high-school squad has compiled a 4-1-1 record. Two of the wins are shutouts by 5-0 and 4-0 scores. The Generals also have a 7-2 blowout victory, have tied a match at 4, have a close 4-2 win and lost by a tight 5-4 margin.


Schools

A 17-year-old Arlington high school student has been arrested and charged with bringing a loaded gun to school Monday.

The incident happened at Arlington Community High School, which is currently located on Fairfax Drive in Ballston. The school was placed on lockdown after police say a security guard spotted the gun in a student’s backpack.


News

A vehicle carjacked on Sunday by a pair of suspects in a Pentagon City parking garage has been located.

Arlington County police said today in a crime report that the vehicle was “recovered in Washington, DC” but the suspects are still at large.

Arlington Jobless Rate Falls Slightly — Arlington’s unemployment rate of 2.2% in October was down from 2.3% a year before, according to new state data. The county recorded about 158,000 residents in the civilian workforce and about 3,700 seeking jobs. Across Northern Virginia, the jobless rate of 2.6% was down from 2.7% a year before. –Scott McCaffrey

Avg. Weekly Wage Among Top in U.S. — The average weekly wage for those working in Arlington during the second quarter of 2024 was $2,243, eighth highest among the 370 most populous localities in the nation. The average income nationally for the quarter was $1,390. [Bureau of Labor Statistics]

Retired ACPD K-9 Dies — “It is with great sadness the Arlington County Police Department and the members of the K9 Unit announce the passing of retired K9 Jax, a 10 year-old Belgian Malinois.
